Re: Why the hell are people angry at the OP?
(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:21 am (UTC)(link)Like others said above, you need to be on top of everything or logged in every day if you want to keep up, because the archiving system might as well not exist for how utterly useless it is.
The only way to keep anything organized in your blog is to be honest to God OCD with your tagging, and most people use tags for jokes instead of organizing.
The archive function requires you to scroll forever or blindly guess when any given post happened if you want to find it.
The tag system is broken, even if used properly.
Too many people use it as a personal diary and then complain when their entries are found because they tagged it with fandom keywords.
The reblog function makes it so that drama explodes exponentially, with no hopes of clearing up matters because even if the OP edits their original post, the edits won't show up in the bazillion reblogs that followed it.
It's the perfect echo chamber.
If you want to, say, find the person number 200 who reblogged your post with 10000 notes, you need to click the "show more notes" hundreds of times to find them.
If someone popular reblogged your post, you need to display all the notes and then figure out which name appeared the most.
It makes control damage all but impossible when misinformation is spread, which is super easy since, when someone reblogs their post, they can edit your words to whatever they which and no one will know unless they go see your original post.
Art theft is rampant. Tumblr is such an easy platform to get popular if you know how to work it, so many people steal pictures and then upload them themselves, sometimes without citing the source, and even if you reblog the notes asking for credit, nobody will see it unless they look through the notes of the post -which I already described why it is so tedious and time consuming to do.
People have done this out of grudges, not unlike the BNFs of old chasing out people who dared criticize them.
And that's not getting into the cyber-bullying, the unmarked porn available for anyone without an account to see, the out of control wannabe-SJWs that ruined real SJ for everyone else (thanks to them so many people don't take "trigger warnings" seriously any more), and the pro-anorexia blogs that got so out of control that the Tumblr team had to step in and forbid them.
And possibly even more things I don't know about myself.

Please get a name on dreamwidth and take credit for this. I want to needlepoint it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:55 am (UTC)(link)I read that as "modern family" and just wasted a few minutes trying to figure out if AYRT was making some grand analogy about tumblr and modern family. /fail

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 01:29 am (UTC)(link)I'm up-thread defending tumblr, but all of this is undeniably true.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 03:12 am (UTC)(link)Re: Why the hell are people angry at the OP?
(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 04:00 am (UTC)(link)This might be kind of true, but tumblr makes it far far easier and far more difficult to stop in almost every instance?
- it encourages huge volumes of image posts so going back through your dash for what you missed is bloated and unwieldly
- LJ doesn't have the same tagging culture as tumblr. They are more often used 'properly'.
- LJ doesn't have reblogging (or it might now?? idk) so the echo chamber and misattribution effect takes a lot more effort for everyone involved. On tumblr there is NO BARRIER to being a thoughtless dick.
- You can lock your shit on LJ
- you don't have to go looking through 1000 reblogs because all the feedback on your post is in the easily navigable comments
I actually haven't used LJ since 2004 and love tumblr, but I unfollow the moment anyone posts a stupid tumblr joke or easily fact-checked bullshit and that's not going to work for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 06:37 am (UTC)(link)Re: Why the hell are people angry at the OP?
(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 07:25 am (UTC)(link)You're right that I forgot about that. It works for explicit blogs, I guess. It's hardly the same as having an LJ where (IIRC!) you can customize the security level for each individual post without having to create an entirely new secondary blog.
Of course both can be abused in similar ways, which I suppose was the original poster's point.
Re: Why the hell are people angry at the OP?
(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 03:51 am (UTC)(link)SO. THIS. It's the very reason why I hate Tumblr, aside from the fact it's not at all user friendly. I hesitate to post any of my work online because of the issue of art being posted there without the proper credit being given or no link back to the original work. Also, there's been cases where the reposter claims the work as thier own. Not cool.
Re: Why the hell are people angry at the OP?
I'm going to save this and link to it the next time someone asks me what's wrong with Tumblr.
