is the OP referencing the Parasol Protectorate series in this secret?
I hope they are because I am reading those books atm and 'crappy YA' or no they are SO MUCH FUN and a fantastic breather from the French Realist stuff I read for uni :D

Love love love love that series. Love. I had so much fun reading them. I just saw that there's a handful of stories for Yuletide and plan to read them in the next few days (if you're not done with the series, do not go over there and look because just the characters and pairings and the suchlike are kinda spoilery for the whole thing if I remember correctly from what I saw, but when you are done--fic! And I haven't checked to see if there's more fic in the archive outside Yuletide yet.)
