Re: Why the hell are people angry at the OP?

DA

I'm cynical and just assume it's popular *because* it cuts down discussion, so it means there's less of a chance of having to talk to someone who ~disagrees~ with you, and makes a well thought out argument as to why.

...But again, I'm 'an old fogie who ~doesn't get~ tumblr', so take a grain of salt with that.

NAYRT, but these are my thoughts exactly as to why tumblr has taken off.

And the whole thing about how people who dislike a certain thing should not be allowed 'in' the tag for that thing. If you make a calm and well-thought-out post about why you hate bananas and tag it 'bananas' because...that's the topic, you're told to keep your hate out of the tag. Like it's a clubhouse where you're only allowed to squee instead of a data sorting tool.

That one I can actually understand when it relates to fandoms because people will purposely use it to post bashing of a ship/character/whatever. [Like, openly 'Hey X shippers! -insert hate here-].'

So I can understand that one, particularly when you can tag it as 'anti-banana' just as easily and still be 'on topic'.

True. I guess I'm more used to the LJ system of tagging where it's primarily within your own journal for your own reference. Maybe a main *and* an anti- tag, so you can tag the main topic but people can still block the anti- tag if they don't want to see that sort of thing?

I don't see why anyone would object to that, but that would also probably be ignored by the worst offenders since they're using the tag to bash people who like whatever it is anyways.

Also true. And circles back to the point that no one's really that serious about a coherent system of tags on tumblr anyway.

True - which is a shame. It could actually be pretty useful if people would just use it that way.
