Late to the party?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
So, um, I just accepted that Star Trek: TOS isn't the pile of junk I'd believed it to be for decades.

Actually it's pretty good in parts, if teeth-grindingly sexist and racist in others*.

On the whole though, I'd say 'good' is growing more likely with every episode I watch. So, time to swallow my pride.

What did you need to re-evaluate F!S?

*I haven't watched much yet, I may be wrong or lacking.

*It was made in the sixties of course it is

Anyway: I had to reevaluate Homestuck. Being contsantly told to read homestuck because I'll like homestuck homestuck homestuck hey listen to this homestuck song homestuck made me assume it was shit but it turned out to be actually clever.

Don't judge media by its fans, in other words.

On the racism and sexism - you need to remember context. 1960's US wasn't exactly the most open-minded of times, and that translated directly to TV. Considering the time period, TOS actually was pretty ground breaking in those ways. [Example? There's a reason TOS is credited with having the first interracial kiss on TV].

AND...um. Most recently? MCU - though I stand by not caring for the Avengers movie. [Movies focusing on individual characters though? Yes please!]

Oh I do realise that it's a 60s programme. That's what allows me to accept all but the more egregious examples :-) I'm still not going to enjoy seeing some of it.

Still not seen Avengers, it's one of those I want to have seen, but I don't actually really want to see.

AYRT

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that you should. Just saying that since most people who complain about it, that I've interacted with, seem to forget that it was a different time period and expect it to conform to modern standards.

The specific Avengers movie was okay...but I thought it was a little busy, and spent too much time trying to follow like 8 characters, which really made the plot it had pretty weak. But that's just my opinion.

More than anything, I think TOS is really uneven. It does have some really sexist and racist episodes, but it also has some really good ones (if you're willing to adjust to the standards of the time), and some that are absolute first-tier all-time Star Trek episodes (I'm thinking specifically of City On The Edge of Forever). More than anything else, it's just different - it's from such a different time period that it's just really radically dissimilar to things that we have now. Not just in terms of race and sex, but in terms of aesthetics and plot and character.

When I watched it as an adult, I was surprised at how good TOS is by even today's standards.

I'm having a hard time thinking of things I've reevaluated, though I know there's a lot. Of course, there are movies I didn't like on first viewing that are now some of my favorites, and movies I loved that I've soured on. Thinking of specific examples is difficult.

TOS is occasionally a Thing Of Its Times, but it's usually only teeth-grindingly so when it's being progressive, due to the fact that most of what it did was either dropping anvils which no longer need to be dropped, or 'good for its time'.

60's batman.

I hated it as a kid. Why was everybody being so retarded!?

When I realized it was deliberately camp in college (yes it took that long, shut up) I suddenly realized it was genius.

Naw, personally I've loved 60's batman since I first saw it...and I neither do drugs, or drink.

Yeah, TOS had some very good episodes, but beware Season 3. It contained, for instance, "Spock's Brain", which I still haven't decided whether it was so-horrible-it's-good or just horrible.

I should probably reevaluate Deep Space Nine, which I didn't like the first time around when I was a teenager. If I rewatched now, I might enjoy it.
