I don't get how that has anything to do with empathy? This is a really stupid way to turn my criticism of people younger than me complaining about really trivial things (I've never seen a better example of a "first world problem" that complaining about a gift) around on me. But F!S is full of anons (or, one anon?) who love to do that so I'm not surprised.

Actually, I was pointing out that you're not practicing the very quality you were claiming an entire generation [quite the generalization] doesn't have. Particularly seeing as we really have no idea what the situation was, or what OP's relationship to the gifter was.
