He was cold and deadpan, but only after he went Heroic BSOD in episode 7.

TBH, my take on it is that the crazy laughter was a kind of detachment exercise, a way to remove himself from the situation mentally so he can cope with what he's doing. Because we learn later on that he does not like killing people, and having to do so has screwed him up even more than the other pilots; he just doesn't admit it as readily.

Oh, great, thanks, that's what I thought I recalled. And yeah, that's a good interpretation. Puts his relief at no longer having to kill at the climax of Endless Waltz in interesting perspective, now. (Another thing I forgot was how messed up all those poor kids were, Heero especially.)

Yeah. I admit I'm a sucker for fics where the pilots try to rejoin civilian society with varying degrees of success (and epic failure).
