Re: Doctor Who tl;dr idk
(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 03:27 am (UTC)(link)I have to say though, the perspective makes it even worse. One thing to yell at an adult, but doing that to a kid is just unconscionable to me. The (perceived) power imbalance, and the lack of respect for her autonomy... God, that's just horrible. I have issues, I guess.
Anyway, I haven't watched Amy's Choice yet, I'll probably get to it tomorrow. Thank you, anon!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 03:38 am (UTC)(link)But maybe I just have a different experience with it, because I was a risk-taking little rebellious brat when I was a kid and whenever my parents got really furious at me was when I knew I had really done something dangerous to my safety and scared them shitless; I didn't really take their warnings and instructions seriously otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-08 04:21 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, he can be kind of an idiot like that :D I think it would make me mad if Amy actually listened to him, but since she kinda just laughs at him, (which he deserves), it instead makes him come off as a cranky old geezer, which transmutes as vaguely adorable in a "lol, I know you mean well and think you're oh so smart, but you're kind of a dumbass" way in my mind.
But I'll acknowledge that I have the privilege of not having any messy personal RL experiences or issues that can be touched off by that kind of behavior in fiction - not implying that you have them, of course! But just as an example, I could totally understand if people who did have them had a far less dismissive attitude than me.
For example, in the very same fandom, I have grandparents who were massively self-righteous and judgmental, and I'm pretty certain it's because I had to listen to them all the time that it took quite a while for the Tenth Doctor to grow on me, because he has those traits too, and while for most of the fandom those traits get a "well sure but who really cares?" reaction, it was difficult for me to see them as just a humanizing character flaw, although I eventually came to love Ten too.
(wow, uh, I kinda tl;dr'd there didn't I?)
