I've been tempted too. But my mother was one of those types who advocated the surgical removal of thumbs if she caught you doing that, and it's a hard habit to break ;)

And pokemon's a good example! You can tell yourself that all the endless walking is because you're waiting for an egg to hatch or something.

Hah, same here. The town I live in now is pretty safe and people from hitchhike all the time, but the town I grew up in was not safe at all to the point that my parents freak when I tell them I'm walking places because they don't think of "walking alone" as a safe activity. Sooo anyway yeah, it's hard to break the mindset of thinking anyone who offers a ride is going to murder you.

And yeah, pretty much. XD

I get said freak-outs from my mother and my co-workers at both workplaces. Those I can mostly ignore, but I don't think I could bring myself to hitchhike.

(My mother also watches a lot of Lifetime movies, which she tends to internalize and pass along as safety advice.)
