I was once talking to a writing teacher friend of mine, whose story later won the Pushcart Prize, about the "seven basic plots" theory and how it was bullshit. One of the plots was "the hero accomplishes the task," for instance. I told him I'd make my own list, consisting of one plot, which went "something does, or does not, happen." He said he'd do one better, applicable to all modern literary fiction: "Nothing happened, and I wrote about it."

I just thought I'd share.
