So... how about those new Pokemon?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like the only one who just can't get excited about it. I hate to be one of those people, but I feel like the games really lost their charm after generation 3. I just can't get excited for more ice-cream cone and garbage bag Pokemon and monsters that look more like Sonic characters.

But even ignoring the new designs, isn't it a bit early for another gen? Black and White 2 only came out a few months ago! I don't even have that one yet!

It just really bothers me, because I've been in this fandom since I was nine and dealt with so much bullying over it, and it's only becoming more disappointing with each generation. I can't even justify buying a 3DS for it.

Black 2 and White 2 weren't a new gen, though, and I don't think it did as well as they hoped. I still don't understand why they put it out, it didn't further the story of the Black and White protagonists, did it?

Well, it tied up some loose ends, at least. They said in an interview that they made it because the people who test-played Black and White wanted to find out what happened to N and Ghetsis, and Black and White 2 managed to explain that.

If it makes you feel any better, this is pretty much how I felt about gen 5. Because yeah, ice-cream and garbage bag Pokemon = yikes.

(And before I get accused of being a gen 1 purist, let me remind you that RBY gave us sentient sludge, a weird-frog-tiger thing, and a duck with an ass on its head.)

Huh. Never thought of Magmar as a duck with an ass on its head... but I see it.

sentient sludge is one of my faves no lie

1 gen? my childhood omg

2 gen? more or less okay, but nostalgia! c:

3 gen? I was wary, but it grew on me :3

I kinda sorta liked 4th gen, but I couldn't get into 5th gen (smugleaf is my favorite pokemon and line of pokemon evolutions forever and ever, though, and the fire pig kinda grew on me, and the weird clown otter has neat evolutions, I guess, but beyond that? nope)

this new gen? ...I think I actually like the design of the starters, but I'm just so tired...

The time between BW2 and XY (in Japan) is about the same as the time between HG/SS and BW. Anyway I don't get why people are surprised that Gen V was short. Should've been obvious from the beginning since the DS was nearing the end of its life by the time they came out.

That being said... I am kind of bummed that I didn't have enough time to complete the PokeDex, hah.

It's been about two years since Black and White came out, so no, it's not much shorter. (There was three years between Gen 1 & 2, 3 years between 2 & 3, 4 years between 3 & 4, and 4 years between 4 & 5.) It's a bit shorter because they haven't shoved a third-gen reamke in (;_;), but really it's not that different.

And hmmm... Without being rude, I really have to disagree with your first poiint. Gen 1 included a red and white ball, a head in dirt, a toxic puddle, a toxic ball, pink jelly, eggs, mimes, ganguros, and the anthropomorphization of a Japanese idiom as Pokemon. At least five different lines either grew extra heads and/or developed angrier expressions as a part of evolution. I love Gen 1, don't get me wrong, but garbage and ice cream Pokemon are completely and totally in the spirit of that generation's designs- more so than a lot of the later-gen Pokemon people tend to love.

Semi-unrelated, but do you have a source for the Lenora art in your icon? It's pretty <3

the anthropomorphization of a Japanese idiom as Pokemon

Which one was it? I recognized all the others you mentioned, except for maybe " a head in dirt" (diglett?)

I know what you mean. I erased my file in B&W and started a new game, hoping I could get into it the second time.

They really don't feel like Pokemon games anymore, but I still try to get into them. My boyfriend describes them as something that only sucks because it's a sequel to something so great, otherwise the newer gens would be decent games on their own.

And can we just talk about how it took almost 20 minutes for me to actually really start playing the god damn game in B&W? omg

..I won't lie, when I saw that trailer I thought there was a pokemon with a giant nipple on its chest shooting a laser at the starter.

Nostalgia goggles.

I've honestly been into each one as much as the last once I gave them a chance. IMLTHO, the series hit its low point of designs with Diamond/Pearl and then picked back up again.
