#1,

I actually knew somebody who started learning Japanese so he could play video games in the original Japanese language. Not too long after I learned this, he had the nerve to say all the people who are learning it just to watch anime were horrible. There wasn't much of a difference.

Whatever the genre is, I think it's respectable that somebody would want to learn a different language in order to understand something in its original language. Whether they're learning Sanskrit or Hebrew for religious texts or Japanese or French for newer works.

Or people who learn Greek and Latin to read mythology. But yeah it's no big deal. I don't know why people think less of fans who do that. What other reason is there to learn another language but to understand the people, and the media produced in that language?

Yup. The languages I chose were just kinda random. I think it's great that people do learn other languages, and even better if they have a reason for it, other than putting it on their resume for college or work, you know?

I think because so many "obsessive" fans do it, that it annoys the ones who are truly interested in the culture. Who knows, really? But I'd have to say I agree with you.
