In terms of genre, he said it had more in common with the British boarding school novels of Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton than with any of the pillar works of the fantasy genre (Tolkien, Lewis, Haggard).

In terms of Literature, he argued the writing style didn't meet the standards typically associated with works of literary greatness. So while it's a great story, it's not really a great work of Literature.
