Fanfic Guide

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-01-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I need a list of kinks (and definitions if you want to) that are usually specific to fanfic (knotting) OR that people often get confused. So nothing that is self explanatory or is common IRL (like crossdressing or dirty talk).

mpreg, wing!fic, genderbent stuff, de-aging fic, sex pollen...

knotting: males have penises that work like in canids; common to the alpha/beta/omega thingymagic

I, uh, can't think of any other that is so fandom specific off the top of my head

macro/micro - characters' extreme size differences, either canonical or fic-based, are the emphasis. Often involves a human-size person and hir action figure-sized partner and is often, but not always, a sexual kink.

Be aware 'micro fic' can also refer to story length, hence why people generally term it 'macro/micro'

So what, my kink is showing *g*

Watersports. It's not exactly the most uncommon one around, but I've met a lot of people who were confused by it when they first came into fandom.

-healing cock: porn in which the focus of the sex is one character caring for another character and making them feel better. This is often found in rape recovery fic and other kinds of h/c that involve psychological harm.
-whorefic: an AU in which one or more character(s) are prostitutes or strippers.

The terms noncon and dubcon might be confusing to someone who doesn't read fanfic, since they aren't terms that get used in real life.

Noncon: short for "non-consensual;" usually rape, but can be extended to cover unwanted kissing, medical procedure, etc., hence why "rape" is not the term commonly used. Usually for the purpose of porn or drama; generally involves the victim clearly not wanting the act to occur, saying or thinking no, and/or not being happy about it later.

Dubcon: short for "dubious consent;" again, usually sexually explicit in nature, but can also refer to a medical procedure, etc. Usually for purposes of porn; rarely is this trope used for drama. Examples include a person initially not wanting sex, then changing their mind as the other person continues, sex while intoxicated, or sex while one person holds a severe advantage over the other. Generally involves only a vague or weak "no" or a "guilty feeling". In real life, there is no such thing as dubcon; sex is either rape or it's not. In fic and smut, it can be a handy signifier for people who want a character to be reluctant, inebriated, or conflicted rather than out-and-out not wanting it.

Another one that non-fanficcers might not know, while not a kink, is the term "trigger warning."

Trigger warning: often abbreviated as "TW". A note placed shortly before a story warning the readers about thing that may trigger a strongly unpleasant emotional reaction, flashbacks, etc. Common warnings are for child abuse, noncon, dubcon, eating disorders, major character death, slavery, necrophilia, bestiality, etc. Trigger warnings can be found on all fic, not just smut, and generally the higher the rating goes, the more likely you are to find trigger warnings. Not warning for common triggers is considered bad form means that you're an asshole.

I've written dubcon drama, twice. Didn't know it was rare.

Huh. I haven't seen it an awful lot, though that might have more to do with the fandoms/fic areas I frequent.

Actually now that I think about it, I've written it too, though it resolves itself retroactively into con so I didn't remember it when I was writing the above.

I dunno, maybe it's really common and I'm just not reading the right fics. I feel like it'd be a thing that's very very easy to get wrong, and so I've sort of steered clear a bit without realizing it.

It's not overly common but it might be one of those things that depends on fandom? Some fandoms are more prone to having situations come up [because of what the canon is/canon is based on] than others.

Curtain fic: stories that place characters in a domestic setting and focus on elements of their domestic life

Aliens Made Them Do It (AMTDI): stories in which two (or more) characters are forced/coerced into sex by outside forces (typically of the alien variety); related to Sex Pollen and Fuck-or-Die, but unlike those, AMTDI usually doesn't involve the participants being under the influence or in an altered state

Heat fic: character(s) feel the urge to have sex for biological reasons outside of their control (i.e. they go into "heat") - definition taken from fanlore

Soulbonding/Psychic Bonding/Imprinting: Two characters are connected on a psychic/spiritual level and feel drawn to one another as a result. Can be purposeful, a spontaneous reaction, or done against a character's will.

Hurt/Comfort: Stories that involve the physical pain, sickness, and/or emotional distress of one character with another character caring for them

Whump: Hurt/Comfort fic that involves copious amounts of hurt, often to torture-levels; ___-whump is usually used to describe what character is on the receiving end of said hurt in these fics (e.g. in Supernatural fandom, "Dean-whump" would indicate Dean Winchester is the one being hurt)

Not sure how familiar these two would be outside of fic, but thought I'd add them just in case:

Established Relationship: The main romantic pairing in the story are already in an established relationship at the time the story begins.

UST: Unresolved sexual tension

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope it was some of what you were looking for.
