There was an "emergency" in my dorm an hour ago (someone burned their dinner) and the alarm is STILL going off SHUT UP SHUT UP

Dorm alarms are the worst. And they always go off at inopportune moments. Like when I wasn't dressed.

Or mid-shower! That happened to me freshman year.

Mine went off once when I was taking a nap, and I was so frazzled I went outside without my glasses or a coat. I really needed both things to be outdoors.

My freshman year the fire alarms in my dorm were kind of broken, so at one point they went off three times in a few days, all at really awful hours of the night (2 AM, 4 AM, stuff like that). It sucked.

Oh man, that reminds me of the time my freshman year when we had four alarms within 48 hours. The RAs got so pissed they made us all stand out in the snow for an hour at 4 a.m. After that I started hiding in my room when the alarms went off, so I don't think it was the effective public safety lesson they'd hoped for.

Yeah, ours were just broken, not public safety. I went out for all of them because they said if we didn't leave our dorms we could get kicked out, or something, and I didn't want to tempt anything. But it got annoying because at that point I lived on the 8th floor and that got to be a lot of stairs.

We had are alarms go off 4 times in one night because they were messed up. That was a horrible night.

I can top that, sort of. One day in my old apartment the smoke alarm broke and was going off constantly. And my roommate refused to call the manager because she never told him I was living in the apartment and kept saying "It's not so bad; you get used to it after a while."

(I still don't understand why she never told him since it was a two-bedroom apartment and he was there often enough to figure it out anyway.)

Check FandomSecrets House Episode Two! It's perfect for you right now.

Anyway a helpful mysterious fire alarm woke me up at seven AM recently. I am not normally up at this time. It was wonderful.

THAT'S A LIE

I don't exactly know HOW to kill myself with a fire extinguisher, but by god I'm going to find out

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Whack yourself with the fire extinguisher? If it doesn't work, whack some more?

I live in a condo with my boyfriend, and I have learned to hate and fear the whole-building fire alarm.

I hate fire alarms anyway, because there was a housefire at my house years ago and I woke up in the middle of it. Bad memories, you know? The OMG PANIC effect is somewhat lessened if I can identify and stop the source of whatever is making it beep. (Usually, at my dad's house, it means that dinner is ready. Our smoke alarm there is ridiculously sensitive, but if it means we don't burn the house down again, we'll put up with it.)

But here at the condo, it just goes off at random times. I don't know where it's coming from and of course, I can't shut it off. It just sends me into OMG PANIC mode @_@

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
you sure it's not steam or the semi-regular beeping that happens when its battery is low? assuming the ones in your room goes off at random times too, not just the building's alarm
leikomgwtfbbq: (Default)

[personal profile] leikomgwtfbbq 2013-01-11 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's the whole-building alarm that goes off at random. Our individual apartment alarm almost never goes off.

Sorry if it wasn't clear!

(I check the batteries to make sure they don't get low. I'm paranoid, you see XD)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-11 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I wanted to make sure it wasn't your alarm. I live in a house and I know from personal experience that when people leave the door open during a hot shower, the steam would make our alarm go off. It takes a long time to turn off too so if we lived in a condo, we'd be one of the people setting off the alarm. :(

(Good for you. A dose of healthy paranoia never hurts.)

When I was a preteen and lived in a trailer with my mom, the steam from our showers would always make the alarm go off whether the door was open or closed. And it didn't matter which shower it was, either. Both of the alarms were super-oversensitive. But I've learned to never complain about them!
