Re: Maybe I should make a few Skyrim secrets
I chose the Empire... though I'm still not quite sure if it was the right choice, and since I joined them by trading the Jagged Crown for a spot in the Legion, I was sort of unprepared for how much I actually felt about it. I'd been working it out logically - what's the best for the most people, what will hurt the Thalmor the most - and then I finally went and did it, and wham, YOU CAN'T GO BACK.
And I'd fought with the Stormcloaks, I took their oath, I listened to Ulfric's speech on why he's fighting and it hurt to turn to the other side because they trusted me at that point. I held the Jagged Crown and Galmar sent me back to Windhelm with it and instead I ran in the other direction.
But you know what, I think I did the right thing. Not for any logical reason, though there is that - the Thalmor would be stifled more by a strong Empire than a broken one - but because, right after being dispatched to Whiterun, I stuck around to hear Tullius's speech to Rikke on why he's being so insistent about stationing Imperial troops there.
And it's all about saving people. He wants to save lives. He doesn't want good, innocent people - some of the first people I ever met in Skyrim, some of whom don't want to take either side in the war, some of whom flat-out support the Stormcloaks - to die because Ulfric needed to make a statement.
The first thing I heard Ulfric talk about was death. He wants to drive the Empire out of Skyrim. He wants to kill those that support them. He says he knows the will of the people but, when asked why he's fighting, his whole speech is about death.
Ulfric wants to kill people in the name of the greater good; Tullius wants to let them live as long as they can, for the same reason.
So I threw in my lot with the Imperials, and so far I'm glad for it. Whether I'll stay that way remains to be seen; I just finished defending Whiterun.
Re: Maybe I should make a few Skyrim secrets
i'll try not to give any spoilers, but i will say that the conclusion of that quest was pretty satisfying for me as an imperial. that, and i just really really like legate rikke (and tullius as well)
overall though, i have to agree with you about ulfric. i was thinking about making another file some day to play for the stormcloaks, but honestly i'm kind of turning my nose up at the idea now. normally, in any game where you can pick a faction, i'll try to play each faction at least once. but i honestly dont know if i want to ally myself with the stormcloaks, even just to say i have.
Re: Maybe I should make a few Skyrim secrets
Okay then, I'm looking forward to it. :) I keep getting distracted by random things along the road, though.
I agree with you there. Originally I was gonna just go with the Stormcloaks and then play the Imperial side later, but... they're kind of racist. (Actually, are they racist in a technical sense? Can men and mer produce viable offspring?) Walking around Windhelm and seeing the kind of crap the Dunmer put up with (especially at the end of Blood on the Ice) was one of the bigger things that made me dislike Ulfric.
I've heard there's some twist at the end of the Stormcloak Civil War questline, though? I'm not sure, but it seems worth it to either play it through or check out the Wiki for a blow-by-blow.
Re: Maybe I should make a few Skyrim secrets
and ooh, i haven't done blood on the ice yet, that's going to be next on my list (pretty sure my last save was in windhelm anyhow). but i do feel you on how gross the dunmer's treatment in windhelm was. ulfric had just straight out given me douche vibes from the beginning, anyway. good to see i was right.
Re: Maybe I should make a few Skyrim secrets
With you on the achievements. I kind of wish joining the different sides of the war actually let you play though a different campaign, not just basically the same thing with the places changed. Like, the Stormcloaks really want the Jagged Crown because X and they actually hold onto it and make it a big part of their campaign, while the Imperials just think it's a nice symbol, or something. Or even just different battle and war tactics, to go with the different cultures and so on. (Though there seems to be exactly one book on warfare in the entirety of Skyrim, so maybe that has something to do with it.)
Aside from the racism in Windhelm, Blood on the Ice actually has a pretty cool vibe to it. It's a lot of fun but may make you actually care about the NPCs, fair warning.
(From the beginning? You knew he was a douche from the moment you saw him tied up and gagged in the back of a cart? (Just teasing, just teasing.)) X)
