I think the reason people do that is the implication that you actually do work harder and that's how you got ahead, not because of sheer luck or because you had some sort of advantage you don't even acknowledge. I hate to say it but that pretty much is the basis of the bootstrap fallacy right there, assuming that you work harder and that's why you're in the place you want to be

I'm the first person to admit that I'm super fucking lucky and that's why I finally made it to a point where I'm not entirely living paycheck to paycheck or worried that my car breaking down will literally ruin my entire life

By the way, "living paycheck to paycheck and car broken down and ruined her entire life" describes one of my family member's lives, in case anyone wondered if this was hyperbole.
