+1

That cracked me up too.

I loved the moment where he doesn't realize that he's named one of his slaves after a character in The Three Musketeers.

He did know D'artagnan from the Three Musketeers, hence the name, he just didn't know the writer, Alexander Dumas was black.

I've only seen the movie once, but I remember Candie not getting that the character D'artagnan came from a book by Dumas and then he also got treated to the revelation of the writer's race. IDK. I thought both things were happening in the scene. He clearly can't have read the book very often or he would have known to associate it with Dumas's name even if he wasn't aware Dumas was black. He's that guy with all the books on his shelves because they look pretty, not because he's read them. He heard the name D'artagnan, perhaps even knows he's a character in a French novel, but not because he read it himself.

I feel like he did say he named D'artagnan after the character but he missed a beat and it was sort of an "Uh...yeah, sure" moment. Either way he almost certainly was not keeping up on his Dumas.

*nods*

I'll have to watch it again to catch all the subtle nuances, but that's what I thought too.

Alexander Dumas is actually black and not fake like the 'black' Mozart tumblr post that was doing the rounds
