Yeah, exactly.

Some parts of the old movie series, he comes across that way, certainly, but the Craig movies? Yeah, no. That Bond is (by necessity of his job) a very unpleasant person is a big part of the current series. (Also, I'm pretty sure the novels were the same way.)

For the older ones, it depends on the actor - I guess you could make the argument for Moore, but certainly not for Connery.

This. Craig is the Bond as he is written in the novels, which makes me so annoyed at all the people complaining about his performance, that he destroyed the image of Bond as the suave, gentleman spy.

He never was supposed to be that way, people. He is a mess. A mess who tries to be good, but still makes mistakes and would do anything if it serves his goal. Go and read Fleming's novels.

People who want a gentleman spy should check out John Drake in Danger Man. He's much closer to a gentleman spy than Bond ever was or will be (it's also much more espionage than Bond, no matter how much I love the franchise, and an awesome show!)

Not that I don't agree that Bond isn't a "gentleman spy" (whatever that means), but the films (both old and new) are a separate canon from the books. Thankfully, as book!Bond is a homophobe and unpleasantly snobbish.

OTOH, Bond of the old films isn't exactly nice either, I have no idea where people get that impression. I actually think Craig!Bond is much more sympathetic than any of the others.
