From what I have read, people are imagining what she could have been thinking and saying she's being forced against her will because of it.

I've long since come to the conclusion that fandom is made up of a disproportionate amount of victimized people than the general population. It's not a bad thing, but it does tend to heavily skew the dialogue when it comes to controversial media like these.

(I once told a fandom friend of mine that I was assaulted for being bisexual in high school. She assumed I was lying because this isn't a trigger for me and it's never really been an issue for me, and after so long in fandom she refused to believe that I could have been assaulted and some out largely unaffected by it.)

I think you're right, the current trends in fandom is skewing discussion. I don't think it's intentional, but it's sort of painting every woman as a powerless victim, and I don't like it.

I mean, look what Bond has been through. He's allowed to come out of it hardened by scar tissue (mental and physical) rather than considered unable to make his own decisions, and I think it's unfair to imply that a woman would not.

And wow, that fandom friend sure was unfair to you. Way to assume that everyone must have the same reactions! Which is, come to think of it, probably one of the main problems with fandom these days.

It kind of disturbed and amuses me in equal measures to see how gender-based double standards reincarnate themselves into feminism. A man goes through a seriously traumatic experience, it's no big deal or they're scarred and stoic as a result. A woman goes through an even mildly traumatic experience and it completely changes her life and being and means she suddenly needs everyone to defend her from everything.

And to be honest, that's not even the worst I've seen, or had directed at me. The worst I've had leveled at me is someone calling a character of mine a bad rape victim. The worst I've seen was not too long ago. A kinkmeme prompt asked for rape fic where the victim's partner reacted more strongly to the rape than the victim him-/herself, the latter being unfazed by it. (Considering some of the hell a lot of the characters in the fandom have gone through, it's really not far-fetched for that to happen.) Wank ensued, and when the OP mentioned how after being assaulted so many times in her life her reaction to another assault was mostly just "not again!", someone replied saying obviously the OP is just so traumatized she hasn't processed it yet/hasn't been hit by all her experiences yet, and that eventually she would, and they ended the comment saying she hopes the OP 'gets the help she needs'. Apparently, if you go through something traumatic but aren't traumatized, something is wrong with you. >.< Quite possibly the most insultingly condescending thing I've ever seen in my life.

Yes. I do think people are trying to be earnest and good, but they're forgetting to think things through.

Without having rad the fic, all I can say is that it sounds like people forgetting that not everyone is the same (again). You get it for less serious topics too; a man wouldn't do this, a lesbian wouldn't do that, and so on. As if every character is a representative of the "average" or the "typical"! I mean, you have to look at the specific character and determine what's realistic/in character for them.
