Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

I can't help wondering though, how the game was meant to challenge her. Ultimately, Caliborn's determination to make what he wanted a reality (and almost reveling in the difficulty) seems to have won out over her more idle immersion in an ideal form of what could be.

I fucking love Callie and even though the comic's probably going to end up with a "accept yourself for who you are" line (or maybe not, who the fuck knows), I just want to say that it's never a bad thing to be who you want to be. I really hope everything works out for you.

This is just so cute. I feel like Calliope would totally want to be friends with you if she were real.

um... what "intersexual" even means?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Intersexed", not intersexual- it's an anatomical term rather than an orientation term or gender identity term.

Basically, it means having a combination of gonads, genitals, chromosomes, and/or secondary sexual characteristics that isn't readily identifiable as either male or female.

[identity profile] nezhit.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
so it just means hermaphrodite?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
This is why google exists my friend. By the by, the term hermaphrodite was debunked for humans as it implies fully biologically functioning sets of male and female reproductive organs (aka can both birth or sire offspring). Intersexed people do not neatly fit into the binary sexes of male or female due to possible factors such as hormones, chromosomes, or what's classified as ambiguous genitalia.

This is adorable art.

Good luck to you, anon.

...the only thing that gets me about this a little is the whole "I want to be a troll not a cherub!" It's a different species...not really quite the same thing. And it makes me think of transethnic stuff but maybe that's just because I've been hearing about that recently...

It is, but it's the best reason for it heard yet.

Cherubs have only hate. Trolls have love and hate (compared to humans, who have only love and is relatively foreign).

Callie wants the whole spectrum. Also, limeblood.

True about the love thing. I'm not really that up in arms about it - and I feel really bad for Callie, basically being the only cherub who wants love and feeling super left out </3

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I've thought a lot about this, actually. My initial reaction to Callie's desire to present as a troll was that it seemed to come from a place of really painful internalized self-loathing/racism/(speciesism?). Cherubs are a weird thing and no one understands, but they're 'supposed' to be super violent and she hates that, and wants to be something she's elevated in her mind as so much 'better'. It makes me think of all the make-yourself-whiter skin creams I saw advertised everywhere in India, or people in Hong Kong getting surgery to have wider, less-Chinese looking eyes. It's because they've been warped by these terrible hand-me-down beauty expectations from colonialism, not because of actual dysphoria. And in that sense, I'd really love to see her feel less unhappy and ashamed about her body.

OTOH, (eventually at least) she seems to honestly believe Roxy when Roxy promises that she wouldn't be scared or grossed out, and that she does want to look that way for herself. So she has the right to do that, and people should be as chill with that as a great friend like Roxy is.

Anyway, I'm glad you've found someone you identify with; and I wish you the best of luck being whoever and whatever you want to make yourself, and I hope maybe thinking of Callie's presentation from different perspectives will make the fandom's messages of 'she should love her real self' (as if they know, right?) feel less personal/accusatory to you.

Do you also believe that Geishas painted their faces white because they wanted to look like white people?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-13 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Colonialism certainly reinforces it, but colorism existed way before contact with whitey.

Well, this is quite a coincidence

[personal profile] feotakahari 2013-01-13 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I just began planning and outlining a story in which the main character is intersexed, was raised as male, and identifies as female. If you're willing to talk about yourself a bit (under the cover of anonymity, of course), I'd be interested in any advice you can give me on how to properly represent an intersexed character. I'd also be interested in any resources you can steer me towards for finding out more about intersexed individuals.

OP here:

sure, I mean I'm not the most knowledgeable about the science of intersex, like the disorders unrelated to me especially, but I'd be happy to share my emotional experience on growing up intersexed.

I think it's cool you're writing a story about that! You don't see it often n_n

Hmm . . . I'm not actually sure what questions to ask first. I don't have much practice interviewing people.

I guess an obvious one is, what do people writing about intersex individuals most often get wrong?

P.S. If you'd prefer to continue this somewhere other than the comments section, I've got a throwaway email address at studentresearcher112@gmail.com. Email it (with a throwaway or with your regular--your preference), and I'll give you my regular email.
