Notes:

Sorry, early today!

Also: I'm not going to officially warn for tongue-in-cheek "triggers" just to provide anyone with a fandom-specific in-joke when there are none in the secret.

Actually, I HAVE seen this, especially Pitbulls. Dobermans at least have enough youtube videos of them taking care of babies that people aren't as vocal about it. I already made a comment about not seeing this about huskies, but people really hate Pitbulls and it makes me a little sad because every Pitbull I've ever known has been sweet, gentle, and full of love.

Unrelated, but when you work with animals inside and outside of a clinic like I do, you come to understand why these dogs have the reputation that they do. I have met just as many adorable and well trained pit bulls as I have terrifying and uncontrollable. It has nothing to do with "oh it was abused as a puppy that's why it's so mean" it has to do with people not understanding the needs of the breed and how to mold it into a well mannered adult. Every generation has a new breed that is "hated on." It's been seen in rottweilers and german shepherd before in the past and it seems that a lot of the popularity surrounding the hate is related to the popularity of ownership. Right now it's the cool thing to own a pit bull, meaning there are thousands of high maintenance dogs with owners who haven't the slightest idea as to what to do with them.

da

German Shepherds?! Seriously?! D: Why would they be hated on? I totally missed this! Please elaborate?

Mid-90s there were just a lot of reported dog bites from german shepherds and it got a lot of media attention. Just like right now where there are thousands of dog bites a day, but the only time it will be in the media is if it's a pit bull.

ohhhh! thanks for explaining

Interesting. I don't remember the media attention (I was pretty young then), but around that time, my mom and I were driving a ways with a German Shepherd in the back seat (we were helping someone move), and a relative of ours was convinced that the dog was going to kill us while we were on the road.

But he was a sweetheart.

It's still the case; lots of insurance/renters/etc put them in the same 'trouble dogs' category as pits, rotties, etc.

I feel like this happened with Dalmatians too. Every Dalm I ever knew was a holy terror of a dog; they'd chase me, knock me down, and generally terrify me even though I was never scared of dogs. Then a few years ago, my mom found a half-dead puppy in her barn that turned out to be a Dalmatian (or at least mostly Dalmatian--its spots are more chocolate than black in some places), and he's the sweetest, most loveable puppy ever. Little bit jumpy, but overall very well behaved, because my stepdad knows how to treat dogs and had the time and energy to focus on loving and raising him and enough space for the dog to run around and be itself.

And I realize in retrospect that none of the Dalm owners I ever knew before had the slightest clue about the breed beyond "it gets about so big and has spots."

I'll never understand people who get a purebreed or close-to-purebreed dog without researching the dog's temperament and needs.

Thissss. Right after the Obamas got Bo, I met a woman who was out walking her older Portuguese Water Dogs; she was already cringing because it was going to be 101 Dalmatians all over again.

This makes me really sad too.

Kind of besides the point because the secret was about stereotyping of markings within huskies, not the entire breed, but nonetheless...I totally agree. I love pits.
