I doubt it's a sympathy/empathy thing - like understanding why and how a character would do/think/feel what they do, or knowing "if I were them in this situation, this is how I'd feel/think/act" is different from "omg, I would do the same (even if I weren't them)!" and all.

I can roleplay characters who aren't like me at all and be perfectly fine at that, but then if asked "would you say you are like your character" it'd be kind of ...? huh? what? No?
