All the crossdressing fic I've read (not much, tbh) seems to have this weird "forced feminization" vibe to it, whether implicitly or explicitly. That's the part that really freaks me out. There ain't no shame in being a woman, and it's not weakening in any way for a man to put on a dress.

YES! I think this is it. Most of crossdressing I have seen has that "forced feminization" vibe. Which is a big no no for me. I am just getting to where I can sort of read BDSM, but I can't read BDSM with forced feminization or humilation. And I think it is because those two things generally go hand in hand.

I'm that way too, OP. I'm great with physical S/m but humiliation makes me run for the back button. Everyone's gotta be looking happy or I'm just uncomfortable.

Me too! Which is why I loathe it when BDSM stuff where everyone is consensually getting their happy kink on gets lumped in with stuff where one partner is obviously not enjoying themselves. I'm fine with rape fantasy being a thing, I just want it being a thing over there away from me.

Humiliation gets me the same way. Especially the "let's do something in public that you're very reluctant too" or "let me take a picture so that you know I could theoretically send this to everyone you know if I wanted" tropes/scenes. DO NOT WANT. D:

Serenity does a job on a planet where men from all over the 'verse participate in a drag religious ceremony. Contrary to my description, this is not a silly or ridiculous fic. It's very, very smart. It uses cross-dressing as a way to explore facets of both Mal and Jayne's characters, and it is, quite frankly, pretty damn hot. I love the way this piece explores gender--its boundaries, its limitations, and what happens when those boundaries are blurred or transgressed. In this fic, Jayne in a dress doesn't make Jayne less of a man, it hyper-masculinizes him instead. I think everyone should read this, especially those skeptical about cross-dressing.

The first time I ever saw crossdressing in fandom, it was in a fic about an abusive relationship. It squicked me out a LOT but purely because of the context - it was a really well-written, surprisingly nuanced fic about terrible things happening, and forced crossdressing was a part of it. So it squicked me out for a long time after that.

Most of the crossdressing stuff I've seen more recently hasn't been forced in any way, though.

I really hate that too. I prefer seeing it as a empowering sort of thing, where there's a one's rejection of societal expectations and acceptance of one's own desires. The man isn't humiliated by wearing the dress, the man is awesome and confident enough to wear the dress.

Freakishly enough I've found a few good fics and fanart on that in the TF2 fandom.
