Crossovers

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just wondering: what're your guys' general thoughts on crossovers?

I'm a huge fan of them, personally, especially if they're well-integrated.

Re: Crossovers

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I like 'em. Not so much fusions, but I love a good crossover. It's hard to get the right balance between 'verses but when it's done right it's my favorite kind of story.

I don't really like them because I find most awkward. There have been a few I found worked but the ones I can remember were all just silly stuff from tumblr. No actual fanfics.

I prefer fusions, where you take the characters in series A in place in the story of series B, or vice versa.

Re: Crossovers

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. But I have some apprehensions on the matter, since I don't read xovers that involve fandoms which I'm not into; and it's all too rare a case when somebody actually writes one that is set in my fandoms only.

For example, I was reading this series on Pirates! Band of Misfits, and then they suddenly spoiled it with Doctor Who.

I myself also wrote a BTTF crossover of the wildest kind. Crossed the poor thing with a criminal TV show. (it's not online, so it's not self-promotion).

Re: Crossovers

(Anonymous) 2013-01-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I really, really like them but I also have somewhat specific preferences wrt them - I hate fusions and I hate it when they completely change one universe or canon to match another. To me, the fun of it is figuring out a way for one universe to fit comfortable with another, and to have them interact - you have to have some level of respect for the canon in each universe (although I'm okay with playing fast and loose with the details) and some kind of internal logic to the crossover.

But, for crossovers that do that successfully, it's probably my favorite kind of fanfic.

I agree with absolutely everything you just said.

Writing: love writing them. Reading? Depends on if it's done well and if it's something I'm familiar with. I care less if I'm familiar with it if it's a fusion but I rarely read crossovers with fandoms I don't know, and Supernatural and Doctor Who crossovers usually bug me.

There are some crossovers and fusions I won't touch with a 10-foot pole, and some I really like. It depends on how well the stories are written.

I'm not a fan of the genre I guess?

I love crossovers. I just love seeing how an author brings together two different fandom universes. See how characters interact. And the weird thing is that I don't have too much preference for the fandoms as long as I know one of them. I don't know why. But yeah, there's a lot of awful ones out there. It's a hard thing to get right, melding the two fandoms into a believable universe.

Here's some off the top of my head that I remember enjoying:
NCIS/SGA - Ziva -Agent Afloat Atlantis
Bandom/Criminal Minds - Genetic Profile
Inception/White Collar - Skybird
Leverage/Criminal Minds - The Clusterfuck Job

I've tried reading them but they always feel a bit weird. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I've never read one that felt natural to me.

Fusions though. I love 'em. Daemon fic, especially.

I am too, so long as they work. One of the biggest reasons they fail, I think, is that the author forgets about the central theme. Two series don't have to have the same central theme, but they do have to be compatible. You can't have one canon smushed together with a canon that's trying to portray reality in a completely different light.

I love crossovers, and crossover shipping. Personally, I find them more fun to write than any other kind of fanfic.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-01-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely love them so long as the crossover wasn't written just so one set of characters could 'meet' and then totally be in awe of and fangirl the other set of characters and be all bowled over by how cool/hot/smart/angsty/tough/whatever they are.

I want well-written xovers that really bring in good stuff from both characters sets and 'verses.

i like them when they work

most of the time they do not work

with very few exceptions, i don't like massive cross overs

Two fandoms crossed together, sure. If I know and like at least one but preferably both, and know enough about the other to follow along if I don't follow it entirely.

Love love love love love love love.

I wish there were more, especially of the long variety. It's one of my favorite genres.

I've read some truly fantastic ones over the years.

Re: Crossovers

I adore them. If done well, they're amazing. I love reading crossovers that find interesting ways to merge the worlds together, and that have interesting character interactions. I love when the crossovers derail canon plots and make it different and interesting.

The problem is that I only like reading crossovers with canons I'm familiar with, and that's tricky to find sometimes, especially if I'm looking for rare fandoms.

I absolutely love Harry Potter crossovers, though, and most fandoms large enough have at least one.

Re: Crossovers

I absolutely love HP crossovers - they're definitely my kryptonite. ^_^ There is not a lot that would make me stop reading one. In fact, in any fandom, I usually absent-mindedly plan at least a Harry Potter fusion and sort the characters. It's great fun.

My favourite HP crossovers tend to be the ones where the characters from Fandom A explore and interact with the wizarding world outside of what's in the actual HP books. Or derail the plot completely. Or, if it's a fandom with magic, how they negotiate the different types - or if it's a fandom with lots of emphasis on technology, how they work with that. It's really interesting

(Sorry, I can talk about Harry Potter crossovers at length :P).

No apologies. HP does seem to be the little black dress of crossover fandoms. :)

Have you read Skoosiepants's SGA/HP fusions? Those are awesome. And I really like hells_half_acre's Demented 'Verse that's an SPN/HP crossover. If you haven't read, lemme know and I'll link you. I might have some more crossovers in my recs as well.

SPN/HP crossovers

[personal profile] agentcthulhu 2013-01-13 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Old Country by astolat (Complete)
Summary: Sam and Dean go to Hogwarts. (spoilers for All Hell Breaks Loose, Deathly Hallows)

The Precipice of Change by sa-kun (WIP)
Summary: Harry Potter was human, but the Master of Death is not.

Not a Potter After All by darkorangecat and paganaidd (Stalled?)
Summary: Shortly after Voldemort's return it is discovered that Harry Potter is not the biological son of Lily and James Potter. He is in fact the son of John and Mary Winchester.

I'm pretty sure you've read Old Country already but what the heck, it's good.

I have indeed read Old Country (which is fantastic) but not the other two. Thanks!

Here's the SGA/HP fusions that Skoosiepants wrote (linked from this rec post): http://lunabee34.dreamwidth.org/263780.html

http://archiveofourown.org/series/18947 Demented'verse by hells_half_acre (SPN/HP): so epically long and awesome

http://liz-marcs.livejournal.com/144724.html A Gift of Ordinary Magic BtVS/HP Xander-centric gen and awesome; I'm forever in envy of the title

I'm not reading SPN or HP right now (or any fanfics, in fact). Demented'verse looks really neat though, I'll pick it up the next time I do some long reading. Thanks!

ETA: I really need the fanfic reading time to do other things. :(

I prefer fusions. I find most crossovers awkward and especially in my fandom, it's hard to find well-written things that aren't all about ships.
