they seem interesting from fanfic. do they have an arc or something that would be easy to read as a stand-alone?

mostly, yeah. they were introduced in an intermission starting here. they don't have a whole lot to do with the main story (at least so far, aside from like two of the characters that show up in the intermission). so it'll make sense for the most part, iirc.
