The bulbus glandis (also called a knot) is an erectile tissue structure on the penis of canid mammals. During mating the tissues swell up and lock (tie) the male's penis inside the female. For domestic dogs the tie may last up to half an hour, though usually less.

when wolves and dogs mate, a thick round knot of muscle swells inside of the female to assure that the dogs are "locked" together long enough for the semen to properly empty into her. any article on breeding dogs will cover it, you may have seen pictures of dogs stuck with their butts together, because the male is still "knotted" inside of the female. fanfic has grasped onto this concept for some strange reason, usually coupled with the alpha/beta/omega concept and so the sexual top will sometimes swell and "knot" inside of the bottom. i guess the feeling of being filled or inflated by something thick is the appeal?? or the intimacy of being literally "locked" with someone else for a half an hour or more until the swelling goes down.
