Eh. I think it'd only be annoying if it got frequent. Even then, there's always page down AKA the space bar.

The only thing I don't really get about Tumblr is this idea that it's rude to reblog gifsets and add comments to them. But I suppose people who just want to look at pictures don't want to read. (Depressing to me, but I'm more of a words person than a pictures person.) People don't seem to like text posts in general and it saddens me, but whatever I guess.

It's less being bitter that LJ is dying and more being frustrated that fandom is moving from words to pictures and gifspams, I think.

I have never, ever seen anyone seriously say anything about it being rude to comment on gif sets when you reblog them.

This! Most of the blogs I follow do this, and no one has ever given me grief for reblogging pics with my own comments/thoughts inserted into the Caption area.

Some people are bigger sticklers about the whole comment thing than others. Mostly when it's viewed as rude is when people use that space to a) bash characters/ships being depicted or generally be shitheads about things, b) start talking about completely unrelated topics, characters, pairings, fandoms, etc., or c) use that space to have conversations with friends. These things, unfortunately, happen rather frequently. Sometimes the comments that people find are amusing and actually add to stuff, but a lot of times they're also irritating as hell to have to scroll through, especially if they fit one of the cases above. And even if the comments are interesting, Tumblr isn't set up in such a way that if you reply to them and add your own thoughts that it's necessarily going to start any sort of conversation. I think because of that, some people view the whole adding comments thing as a bit attention whore-y.

I agree that frustration about the shift in fandom is probably the blame for some of the comments/backlash against Tumblr, too. I enjoy Tumblr for what it is, but I'd also like to have a place to have actual discussions.

This. I guess. To be honest, I have no idea what Tumblr etiquette is, but going off my own feelings - I actually really want people to talk on my GIFsets. :/ Right now, I have to click every notification to get to the possible tags, which is worth it if someone says "this is perfect" or something, because it makes me smile. But if people flail on the actual post, I'm happy too! Even if it's something like "MY ANGEL" or whatever. It means people are engaging with something I made, and it's great!

On the other hand, I'd probably be annoyed if people started talking about something else, and I was DEFINITELY annoyed when I made a GIFset about Character A and someone reblogged it and added a comment about how Character A is SO MUCH BETTER than stupid Character B - a character I really like. :/

So I think it's fine to comment as long as you treat it as a comment you know the OP is going to see.

I made a Tumblr post once, just a simple picture of my OTP... It was plain and unremarkable enough, and only got four "likes" which was fine, I don't care about that... but then BAM someone more Tumblr famous than I reblogged it with a POOP JOKE attached to it, and then all of a sudden my little post of my OTP has over a hundred notes, not fangirling my OTP, but lolzing at the POOP JOKE.

So, yeah, Tumblr, I don't get you. I don't think I'll EVER get you.

I don't even understand how certain people become tumblr famous. Unless they're creators or really awesome fanartists or a niche fandom-specific tumblr or something, half the time I'm just like... wut? Their blog is okay and they're funny if you get all their in-jokes, but I get a lot of the same content from people I follow who have like 50 followers.

I feel like someone should do a study of Tumblr post popularity and reblogging trends. I feel like it would be fascinating.

Gosh, THIS. I'd love to figure out the formula for "Tumblr Fame" and what actually defines Tumblr fame. When I make my own post or gif set (like, when I'm the Source, not just reblogging) I average anywhere from 400-2,000 notes per post, which seems like a lot to me, but I only have ten followers. So I don't even know what the fuck is going on. I thought maybe one of those ten people is "Tumblr Famous" and reblogging my posts to boost my numbers but no, they all have modest followings, too... So I've given up trying to understand.

If you post in the main tags, people who track them are going to see it. If you're really curious, you can check the notes and see if there's a lot of "reblogged from ONE USERNAME" notes.

And tumblr fame metrics would be really cool! But I think it depends on the size of their main fandom, too.

I'm mostly of the same mind re:things I've made. I generally don't get annoyed about comments on stuff I've made unless it's character/ship bashing or people trying to start wank or generally being jerks. Or unrelated conversations between two or three people, but that's mostly because those tend to be rapid fire and then it's like a bajillion notifications on my dash clogging things up. And you're right, in that it is really nice to see that people like stuff without having to click on their reblog to read their tags. It would actually be nice if there were a way (aside from the askbox) for people to give creators direct feedback or comments, but Tumblr's not really set up for that and the like/reblog system is set up to be a proxy for that. It just gets a bit hairy since, unlike comments you leave on an LJ post or a fic somewhere, when you comment directly on what's being made it goes to everyone and not just the creator, and while some people find it interesting, some people get annoyed with it. One of those things about Tumblr that's an upside and a downside, really.

I have seen some people who get seriously bent out of shape over people commenting with anything on their gifsets/art/whatever, though. I think there are some people who've either seen that or been on the receiving end of that who'd just rather play it safe than risk bringing down the Wrath of the Creator upon them (or the Wrath of People Who Follow Them and Think Comments are an Affront to All That Is Sacred, since some people will bitch out people that reblog and add lengthy comments, too).

I'll admit that it does get a annoying when someone reblogs something on my dash and it has a suuuuuper long string of comments on a gif set or piece of art I otherwise find interesting, but I have the same issue with super long text posts. I find it's a lot easier to scroll past tags than those. Also, if you want to reblog said post for the gifs but don't care about other people's commentary, with tags you just hit clear all and bob's your uncle, but if they've commented on the actual post you have to click on the original version of the post or a version that's sans comments and reblog that. Or, granted, you can just delete the commentary, but I've seen people get pissy and yell at people because that is ~omg rude~ as well.

A lot of the "etiquette" rules around Tumblr seem to be centered around a) not clogging up people's dashes and b) keeping the site relatively quick to use. Most of time, too, they're stuff that's not really that big a deal and a personal preference, but the majority personal preference generally wins out and becomes the unspoken "rule". And I cannot believe I am giving Tumblr commenting etiquette this much thought. What the hell is my life, lol.

You're a braver person than me, because Tumblr etiquette confounds me to this very day. :P I think Tumblr's an excellent way to share things, and I really like it for the sheer amount of content, but it's awful for feedback and conversation. On LJ or DW, you make something, and people comment saying they like it or whatever. On Tumblr, you make something, and people reblog it, and some people add comments and some people reblog that, but some people see it in a different way and add different comments which also get reblogged, and it's a confusing mess.

The difference between Tumblr and LJ's commenting system is kind of like, Tumblr doesn't really acknowledge the creators as much? It's difficult to explain, but on LJ all the comments are directed to the creator. Whereas on Tumblr, since people reblogging everything are putting this on their own personal blog, the comments they make are directed at their friends/followers. eg on LJ comments someone will say "You're a great artist, I enjoyed this" and on Tumblr someone will say "LOOK GUYS I FOUND THIS AWESOME PIECE OF ART it reminds me of a headcanon I have" and so on. It's kind of a subtle differences, and I find it hard to explain. :/ Sorry if it's confusing!

But I think that's why some people get annoyed with comments in reblogs, even though I don't really get it myself. I've never seen anyone get pissed off about that, but I can definitely imagine it. Tumblr is weird sometimes.

The perfect fandom system would be a mix between Tumblr and LJ and A03/ff.net (say what you will about the quality of the fics, it's really easy to find things on it). A chimerical site with the best of all these features and with none of the drawbacks would be amazing - alas, I lack the imagination to figure out how that will work.

I heartily agree that ff.net shouldn't be overlooked in designing this hypothetical site. I started out there, and while the quality elsewhere is mostly better, there have been so many times I wished that every single fic on, say, lj was part of the same *searchable sortable database with neat little dropdown boxes so you can find exactly what you want*.
