Kind of a vent :(

I was telling my housemate about my new ugg boots* (literally just going "I'm so glad I got them my feet were freezing but they're snug and warm) and my other housemate was "i can't listen to this it's disgusting!" and left the room.

:(

I know she's vegetarian and animal rights, but she also knows I only buy local products (the ugg boots were made by a friends farm, so I know the animals are treated right and humanely killed. I grew up in a poor farm so I'm incredably used to wearing such things. It's going to be eaten, might as well use all of the sheep) and I was just ??? :( because I make a special effort not to joke about animal death for her and this felt out of the right wing especially considering she is fine with my slippers (also sheepskin) and she has no problems with me eating meat so what's the deal with wearing them? I'm all in favour of using all parts of the animal, it's more sustainable.


So now I'm just very :( today.


* sheepskin boots with the wool side inside. Good for cold days inside.

I guess ugg boots are just more "in your face" than the other things you mentioned, for your friend.

It might be that she tolerated everything else and this was a final straw kind of deal for her.

It might be that she had other upsetting stuff in her mind and this was beyond her tolerance limit for this day/week/etc.

maybe there was something upsetting in the paper today idk. i'm hiding in my room because it's cold and i'm wearing them. i'm probably being a touch sensative because i wasn't prepared for it.

(normally i try to keep things that may upset her out of sight. thing is, i come from a farm and now live in the city. a lot of my things are leather or sheep, like my hat and coat. I've got my sheepskin rug in storage so she doesn't have to see it.)

Maybe she was just having a shitty day/was in a mood. Maybe it has more to do with her than actually having to do with you/your boots? Idk. Seems pretty weird to me otherwise.

Thank you :( She seems happier now (I bought things for our veg garden and talking about pet I'm adopting next week seems to have perked her up) and I'm still wearing them, but she hasn't made any passive aggressive comments on them like she did the one time I bought cage instead of freerange eggs so I'm going to...just not mention them.

Even though I think wearing animals is less wasteful than eating them (she's no probs with that) lol.

Ugg is a brand name, maybe she was confused by that. I wouldn't assume your boots were made humanely on a friend's farm if you called them "Uggs"

I mean, I didn't even know people called that style of boots "Uggs" in general (I assume this is kind of like calling all sodas "Coke" and all copiers "Xerox machines")

I have no problem with wearing leather and suede though and vegans who judge me for it pretty much annoy me

I'm in Australia, Uggs are a generic term here (like Akubra hats) rather than a brand. A glance at wiki just taught me that they're a brand name outside of Australia.

TIL that a US company has trademarked a generic Aussie term outside of Oz and NZ. That's not on, mate. :/

It's actually the other way around, more like someone trademarked soda, marketed it as soda (tm) in the rest of the world and sent cease-and-detest letters to the small family soda companies who had been selling soda for decades.
