But how can Pitch Black be PURE EVIL W/ BRAIN DAMAGE when he's really just an otherworldly soldier with the most TRAGIC BACKSTORY EVAR? D:

...You've never looked into his movie backstory, have you? All the official comics? Yeah, he is actually pretty tragic. And the thing that pissed me off most about the movie was how they went on about THEIR CENTER being important, except when it came to Pitch and his Center is BAD. Because it's Fear.

Yeeeeah, that seemed off to me, too... I went in to that movie with no context whatsoever from the books or the comics, so I had no idea how tragic Pitch's backstory is, but still I figured hey, the way they're going on about how Jack "holds the record" on the Naughty List but that's okay, we'll "wipe clean the slate" and stuff, they'll probably redeem the villain, too. I kept waiting for Pitch's backstory to pop up (seriously, as soon as we see the rickety old bedframe in the woods, I was all, "Oh here we go, time to find out more about the villain so we can redeem him at the end") but then... nope. Fear is bad and will always be bad and even though it was never given the chance to be anything else, we'll just cheer when we drive it back into the dark, alone and unloved. Woooooo....?

It's worse when you realize the entire struggle came out of a complete misunderstanding. The Man in the Moon wanted them all to work together--including Pitch. And then North basically blew it. You see in the movie he's not the best with words, and he... Says the wrong things to Pitch and so Pitch takes it as, "You need to disappear, Fear is bad."

And then the part with the boy, and how obviously broken up Pitch WAS over him despite what he said is... It tore my heart out, to say the least. And then you realize, he's old. Older even than Sandman, probably. To him, the lives of the children the Guardians protect is the blink of an eye. He's been around so long, he's used to them dying. And it's frustrating, because to him, they grow up so fast... And then they die much too fast. He basically got to the point where he wondered WHY.

And then he lost sight of what Fear can do to be good. And he lost sight of the difference between fearing and believing, something he used to have.

Yeah, even not knowing about his backstory the first time I watched the movie, I felt the end kinda fumbled with the whole, "Fear is always bad rar!" crap. Hell, we see the Guardians (esp Jack) seem to actually sympathize with him when the kids start walking through him... then when he's getting dragged off by his Nightmares, it's "LOL, sucks to be you!" I was like, "The hell...?"

SERIOUSLY! I was SO confused by the emotional leap the Guardians made between those INCREDIBLY sympathetic faces they make when Pitch realizes that the children can't see him any more (they all look SO sorry for the guy!) but then Pitch turns around and BAM there's North, ready to pommel him, and Tooth, who literally punches him in the face. O___o SERIOUSLY HOW DO YOU GO FROM, "Awww, poor guy" to "OH WAIT I FORGOT TO PUNCH HIM GOODBYE" in two seconds flat?

The punch didn't bother me, but the fact that they don't try to help him--and seemed HAPPY--when he was being dragged of, did.

Yeah, the punch itself didn't really bother me (Tooth wouldn't have gotten closure on the fact that Pitch KIDNAPPED HER BABIES otherwise) but the emotional leap from sympathy to "HAHA, IT'S YOUR FEAR THEY SMELL! SUCK IT!" had my eyes as wide as dinner plates in sheer WTF. O___O

Yeah, that one made me go "wut." I just... It would be one thing if the extended the olive branch and he threw it back in their faces, but they didn't. So it was so bizarre.

So I headcanon Jack visits him often and at first, there's resentment from Pitch, but as time goes on, there's a slow, budding friendship. :c

Pitch should totally become the Guardian of Halloween.

I don't see many people adopting that headcanon or thinking that it is at all plausible, especially if they know about his book backstory. Feel free to go ahead and think that headcanon if you really want to, but please try to realize that not everyone who disagrees with it wants to woobify the hell out of Pitch, they may have their own headcanon or just wanna stick to that deliciously tragic canon backstory.

And when did I say anyone should adopt my headcanon? Or that they couldn't have their own? Or that they couldn't have the canon backstory?

I said this is my headcanon, this is what inspired it, I know it's canonically wrong, and I fear the woobie faction wouldn't like me for it.

S!B: The plotholes are bigger than the plotbunnies.

I took my nieces to the movies one night. That is my sole experience with the canon of RotG.

I've learned since that the story was based on a book series, and yes I'm interested in reading the books. Mostly because I know my headcanon is silly, and I'm curious what the truth might be.
