I guess you're just a fan of good shows, then. I think you're missing out, though--sometimes a bad show still had a great idea, and the fans do things with it the author never even dreamed of, or didn't have the guts to follow through on.

Nothing wrong with that. Everyone reads fic for their own reasons and we all have particular things we like. If you feel like that's the only thing that fic has to offer for you that canon doesn't, then keep reading that. That's not the case for everyone, but that's a personal opinion and preference thing, really.

I feel you, anon. I get nothing from gen fic, aus, what have you. If I don't like the canon or where it's heading, I tend to drop the media or create headcanons to make it more palatable that don't /really/ alter canon.

I never understand this, because sex in fanfiction is almost exclusively boring and IKEA. Like...if all you want is the sex, couldn't you find better material?

OP might like reading sex with characters they know. There's better erotica out there than most smut fic, but sometimes I want to read about someone who isn't just a blank face.

lol seriously? sure it depends heavily on the fandom and the skill/maturity level of the writers, but i find fanfic sex way more interesting than the original published stuff i've seen (especially for niche stuff).

Because this doesn't need to be a secret when it's an opinion most of fandom shares. OP is not a special and unique snowflake who needs to keep their aberrations under the bed. OP is exactly like everyone else in fandom, so why the secret?

I like smut fic with substance more than PWP, but then if there's too much substance...I scroll. And feel like I should have more patience.

You are not special in this regard. Many, many people will not read fanfic unless it has explicit sex in it.

I know the feeling somewhat. Can't stand romance in my canon. Fandom does it better and hotter and more varied. I like the canon to advance the plot and the fandom to study the characters. I'm not going to read fic that just rehashes what the canon offers.

I only read fics which are NOT smutfic. I think that more rare in fandom. I enjoy the type of character exploration which often can't happen in canon.
