I don't have a problem with people who create under the influence of things, but someone who brags about their substance use sounds obnoxious to start with

Definitely this. I've often used alcohol in moderation to relax and open up both for writing and artwork. But I'd never consider bragging about it publicly and in association with my work itself. That shit sounds beyond obnoxious.

The flip-side, of course, is that some straightedge types will interpret any reference to substance-use that isn't couched in terms of embarrassment or shame as bragging. Because it reads like bragging to them.

Basically it's that old F!S thing where the OP's subjectivity means it's completely impossible to make any judgements on this without some examples of what zie's on about.
