Comments and Kudos

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Just curious for people who have ao3 accounts- what is your usual comments to kudos ratio?

Now that I've been in my little fandom for a while I generally get about a 6 or 7 percent hits to kudos.

It's generally about the same. My fic are mostly for smaller fandoms that aren't super popular on AO3 yet, so I average somewhere around 5% hits:kudos ratio on most fics. I think it's probably more if you're in more active fandoms or if you write a particularly popular pairing, but I'm not sure.

My most popular fic on ao3 has 140 kudos and 7 comments total, less since a few are just me replying to a comment.
But in general I guess my ratio is usually 1:10 comments to kudos, it's usually pretty disproportionate.

My most popular works get about 10% of hits leaving kudos. Comments generally have a 1:7 ratio with kudos. It's...very depressing when laid out like that.

From what I've seen that ratio is actually really good :D feel proud, nonny!

My highest one ever was seven percent and it was for Yuletide so I figure that probably skews it. Usually right now I get like five or six and a half.

I feel really bad about visiting your fics after the initial kudos. AO3 should have some kind of hit neutralizer or something. :( So yeah... a lot of those are probably me.

Actually ao3 does have a hit neutralizer provided that you're accessing from the same ip :D lol some of them are mine from when I access stuff non logged in on school computers or on my phone but it only counts the ip once. You're gold.

And also I'm doing pretty much the same as everyone else in community fandom so I'm happy :D

Cool. Cool. Cool. I think I've read them at school a few times and I'm not sure I always remembered to kudos though. :(

To me, a long-term kudos yield of 8-10% means something is a real hit, and under 3% is kinda a flop. Most things I write fall in between.

It depends on a lot of things - such as the fandom, the age of the fic and whether or not it's porn. Some of the porn that gets the most hits has a relatively low kudos ratio, especially for niche kinks in small fandoms, where conceivably a lot of the hits came from people surfing kink tags, so they might not feel comfortable kudosing (particularly not if they're logged in) if they don't know the fandom but opened the fic due to the kink. I also find that really popular fics have greatly diminishing returns over time, because people see that you've already got 150+ kudos and don't bother throwing in another one.

Comment ratio seems to depend entirely on a) the fandom and b) whether or not it's for an exchange or collection. If it is, it will get tons of comments. Oh, and porn seems to be even worse at getting comments than it is at getting kudos. I have one tiny fandom that's full of profligate commenters who banter around, thread together, pick out details, etc. So my most commented-on fic has about 450 views; my most viewed fic, with almost 4000 views, has slightly fewer threads and many fewer comments.
