Can I ask what your reading and study habits generally are?

I'm a college prof, and one of the classes I teach is a freshman study/life/college student/citizenship class; I might be able to give you some pointers to help. And even if not, you have my commiseration. *hugs* Don't be down on yourself.

Well, my teacher lent me THE KEY Study Guide, which helps. But the thing is, I drift off easily. I have to be moving around while I read, and I need to hear myself read or at least have a bit of sound in the background. I can't read in complete silence.

That's about all. I feel like all I need is to know the terminology and my opinions can then take over from there. But all the words get mixed up in my brain, and they don't seem like individual terms with their own definitions, they seem like just another piece of Soc 30-2 :/

Are you being tested on just the definitions of key terms? Is it a vocab test? Or are you having to apply concepts and etc?

No, it's mostly just questions on economy, which would be an essay, or multiple choice questions like "during WW2 canadians of what ethnicity were treated as enemy aliens?" just as a couple examples

There's more than just knowing terms, it's really knowing what went down back then. there's no understanding, it's just...memorizing, basically. That's how I feel anyway

Okay. Couple of suggestions then (which may or may not work for you).

1. Study/read in small chunks. Maybe 15 minutes at a time followed by some sort of physical activity (a walk or something).

2. Study/read in groups. Talking about what you're reading with others clarifies your own understanding and helps you remember.

3. Self-test. At the end of reading/studying a chapter, pretend you are the teacher and make out a test based on what you think your teacher might ask. Answer the questions. Share this with someone else and discuss your answers with them. You could also summarize a chapter and section and then ask for feedback from a classmate (did I understand this correctly, etc.).

4. Talk to your teacher. We're paid to sit in our offices and do nothing for so many hours a week if students don't come along. (It sounds like you may have already done this one, though)

5. Does your school have free tutoring? It might help to take advantage of that.

6. Are you taking notes as you read/study/participate in class? If not, starting might be a good idea.
