Yeah, the combined unit sales of Ruby and Sapphire were around 13 million, making them collectively the best-selling title on the Gameboy Advance. And if you add in Emerald sales, that number shoots up to a bit over 19 million. True, RSE didn't sell quite as well as the other gens, but it sold leaps and bounds better than anything else on the GBA.
And... well, when RSE came out, those people who were kids when RBY came out were in that awkward age range where anything you liked when you were younger is uncool and kiddie and stupid and for babies, and that had mostly subsided for the original Pokemon generation by the time DPPt came around. I've met quite a few Pokemon fans who've liked the franchise since gen 1, but skipped gen III for that very reason.
