Very very very much this. Not least because 'Professional Writer' doesn't pay nearly enough for it to be worth it, to me; writing is generally something I find hard and I love what I can get out of it, fandomwise, but no way would I do it for a living. I have a vocation and it's bookkeeping/tax wrangling/hopefully accounting if I can get my ass back into school, and if I do make it that far then I should earn a damn sight more than 99% of fiction writers. I mean LOL, one of my IRL friends who I originally met on a videogame fanfic board didn't even finish college and he's pulling down $50k a year supervising a business services department, and he's painfully bored with the easiness of his job. Fanfic only limits your potential if writing is the only area you have potential in.
