Okay. Firstly, you do realize that most artists, authors and musicians compose their best works while being brain-addled, do you?

Secondly, as a Muslim artist and (former) fanfic writer, I think I can relate to this. There's just something really depressing (and grating) about pushing yourself to do your best but noticing that others are getting ahead of you by imbibing things that are supposed to be haram, religously illegal, and getting more praise for it. (Muslims can't drink alcohol or consume anything that affects the brain. This include recreational drugs).

It feels that no matter how much you try and do your best, you will never be at the top unless breaking rules that, through religous conventions, you can't break. Sometimes, I end feeling... sad at all of this.

I don't know that most do, but certainly some do. Some of the most famous ones in fact. But I don't think that you can necessarily chug back a few beers and become inspired. I think it's very much an individual thing. I for one can't write shit when drunk. I do best in the morning, in a very quiet room -- no music, no ambiant noise, and I know that doesn't work for many people.

Just because famous artists used drugs doesn't mean that the drugs is the cause of their creativity! I think that's the point people are missing.

Sure, some artists, authors, musicians used drugs or alcohol as a lifestyle choice, so do many other people. But those same musicians authors or artists are usually extremely hardworking and dedicated- a little obsessive, even- when sober. *That's* where creativity comes from.

This has the ring of an urban legend--actually, it has the ring of utter bullshit. Yes, some talented people also drink and use drugs, and some of them still produce good work while under the influence, but it's ridiculous to believe that the best work is always produced by artists under the influence, so that abstainers can't possibly compete. GARBAGE. This is an excuse people make to keep abusing their substance of choice and (usually) to keep fucking up their lives.

I'm not even a Muslim, but I'd bet the farm that there are (and have been) many, many observant Muslim artists, poets and musicians producing brilliant work without the dubious "aid" of alcohol or drugs.
