As a Muslim, It is considered haram, religiously illegal, to consume or imbibe anything which affects the brain. This includes both alcohol and recreational drugs; in other words, I don't drink or smoke or take drugs when I write fanfic or draw fan-art.

After seeing a lot of responses to OP's secret, I wondered, is there anyone else out there who's the same as me?

For years I could rarely afford anything stronger than caffeine. They were some of my most productive years in fandom.

I've actually never written while under the influence. I do drink and I've tried pot in the past and found it not to my liking, but I've never really been inclined to do anything creative while not sober. I tend to be the giggle at things and then pass out for 12 hours type of drunk, though. I know some people who legitimately seem to feel more creative while under the influence, but it just makes me feel giddy or sleepy, neither of which contribute greatly to my personal brand of creativity.

So, the short answer: I haven't, and I haven't ever really felt inclined to (but I have no issue with anyone who does; different strokes and all that).

I've never drunk or used anything, and coffee rarely does anything for me, so, same here. vov

I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs at all. I've drunk a few times in my life, but it just makes me dizzy and unhappy.

I prefer to be focused when writing, anyway.

I can't drink alcohol because it interacts badly with my medication. Before I was on meds, I did drink sometimes but never wrote drunk. So whenever I write it's sober.

I can't stand the taste of alcohol. Even reasonably mild white wines taste like I'm drinking lighter fluid, I can taste the alcohol in a mixed drink (even with Godiva liqueur and milk), and beer is just nasty. So I don't drink. And I've never had any interest in attempting any other sort of controlled substance. So all of my art is influenced by nothing stronger than caffeine and sleep deprivation.

Oh gosh yes, the taste. I have never even tasted alcohol because the SMELL is so repulsive. I thought it was just that people I know drank cheap beer/wine or something, but then my girlfriend got some fancy beer, and "good wine", and they both smell every bit as awful.

I mean, alcohol smells exactly like what it is: stagnant water with spoiled food in it. Why would I want to drink something that smells like the dumpster I used to toss stuff into at my old grocery store job?

I rarely drink, have never gotten properly drunk, and the last time I did anything illicit was back in college (15 years ago), and then, it was only while playing cards.

So, I do all my writing and drawing sober. I honestly can't imagine trying to do anything like that while stoned. I mostly made horrible jokes only I understood, giggled, and got fascinated by random doodles.

... So, a lot like when I'm trying to write, actually. <_<

I drink, but usually try to limit it to a couple of times a year, for conventions or birthdays or Christmas. I don't know my family history (adopted), but I have a terrible addiction to other foods when I'm down in the dumps, and I'm just not willing to risk developing that sort of behavior around something like alcohol.

Besides, when I DO drink, all it takes is one for me to get tipsy and not very good with judgment, and then I am like the above anons who get giggly and fall asleep. Probably something to do with my metabolism, but it wouldn't do me any good at all to write drunk. I think best when I've had a good night's sleep, a healthy meal, and crank up the soundtrack to whatever show I'm writing about.

I've never used alcohol or recreational drugs in my life, because frankly, I have issues with control, and the idea of acting in a way that I wouldn't normally act because I lack impulse control is terrifying.

I've got over a million words of fic logged on AO3 alone, none of it with the assistance of substances harder than a shot of mocha capuccino mixed with hot chocolate.

I don't drink or take any drugs. No smoking either. I went through about a year when I drank a lot and partied but got that out of my system and have no real interest in that type of thing. And I never really thought of myself as more creative while drunk, so nope, no writing or art or anything.

Apart from anti-anxiety/depression medication, I rarely dive into artwork making without being sober. My problem is mostly being too anxious/jittery to do anything productive. I actually have to get myself into a calm state or else I become too manic or immersed in the work.

Just curious, is caffeine included in that?

I also don't drink for religious reasons, but there have been times when I drink caffeine to stay awake all night and finish a story.
