Cabin fever?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-15 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
I need some help, f!s. I've been on winter break from college for a little less than a month. I've pretty much been cooped up in my house the entire time except for during Christmas eve and Christmas day, and I feel like I'm starting to lose it. I'm falling back into nervous habits I spent years breaking, I'm anxious all the time, and I've started crying over the stupidest things.

I think I really, really need to get out and do something, or at least find something creative to do inside that will keep my attention. I only need to make it two more weeks until classes start again and I can spend all day at my university's campus.

The problem is I live in the middle of nowhere and have no friends anywhere nearby, so going out and doing something sociable isn't something I can do. Doing stuff outside isn't much of an option either, because all our snow just melted and everything is mud. I'm also living with my incredibly judgemental family, so if I do anything "weird", I'll get chided for it for sure. I'm also limited by the fact that I'm flat broke.

This has left me with a PS3 and a bunch of games I've already beaten, an internet with nothing much to do after 30 minutes or so, and origami. I am seriously at wit's end here. I've tried drawing and reading, but I've reached the point where I can't concentrate long enough to get anywhere with either.

Help? Any ideas?

Find a way to brave the mud and go for a short walk, or explore a little, or idk.

Can you drive somewhere? Take a few hours to go do something somewhere that isn't the house, or just to clear your mind, even if it's just by yourself.

I might have to. The only issue with going for a walk is I don't consider the area safe enough to leave my family's property alone, because for a place that's in the middle of nowhere, there's still a lot of creeps. During summer, I bring my dog with me for protection when I go for walks, but it's still cold enough out that I'd feel bad about keeping him out with me for too long. A short walk is something I might be able to do though.

I can't drive though, so the second option's out. I forgot to mention that.

Do you have transportation available? Sometimes when I lived at home and started to get a bit stir crazy, I'd just do something simple like run to the store or the library or anywhere that I could go and just sort of hang around without any expectations, just to give me a chance to get away and stretch my legs a bit. Even if I didn't really talk or socialize with anyone (I usually didn't), it still helped. You could even offer to run errands for family members if needed, or maybe hitch a ride into town with someone in your family (if feasible) and then take an hour or so to go off and do your own thing.

Barring that, do you have any one you could call and just have a chat with? It won't get you out of the house, but talking to someone who's not your family might help, too.

Other than those, my only suggestion would be maybe to attempt to do something physical inside the house like cleaning or organizing your room or knick-knacks or what have you. That's something that your family might not consider weird, but it can be a good way to get out some nervous energy. If you like to cook and your family wouldn't make a big deal out of you using the kitchen, there's that as well.

I can't drive, but my brother can. The problem with having him take me somewhere is our mother often calls from her workplace and has him run errands or asks us to do things at home, so we'd get in trouble if we were out doing something stupid somewhere instead of being at home where she expects us to be. We're adults, but our mother still treats us like children and expects us to do whatever she says.

There isn't anyone I can call, no. All of my offline friends live outside the country and even in really different timezones, so calling them is pretty much reserved for emergencies.

I've actually been doing some of your last suggestions already though! Haha, it's actually what made me ask for help, because I noticed I was getting OCD and color-coordinating everything down to my origami paper. Our house can definitely stand for some cleaning though, so that's an option. (I also have a bunch of dogs who could stand to take baths...) I don't know about cooking though. I'm limited to what food is in the house and my mother has a habit of only buying food she likes, which severely limits my resources. I might have the stuff I need to make cookies or something though. o/

Thanks.

You're welcome! I hope that some of the suggestions help. Cookies are always a good idea! And hey, if you like sugar cookies, they're pretty easy to make and don't take many ingredients. And bathing dogs will definitely keep you busy for awhile as well. ;)
