This may, in fact, be my favorite movie of all time.

What do you expect? The movie is over twenty years old. Most of the people who are fans were kids when the movie first came out and are in their 30's and 40's now. Not their fault.

Well it did come out in the 80s...

It came out over 25 years ago, so it's hardly the original fans' fault that they're older. Without some kind of half-way popular new sequel/tie-in/something, it's not likely to get a big popularity boost all of a sudden. Maybe just try to introduce as many people as you can to it?

That's the risk of being fannish over 80s stuff, OP.

A good many of my fannish friends are older than me, some by 20+ years, and it's never diminished my enjoyment of fandom. Age isn't something that I generally register online unless people are posting about the internet speed in their retirement home or about how they long for prom to arrive. LOL

That fandom has always had a lot of an older fan presence. I'm not too far from being old enough to be someone's mom age now, but I can remember being in that fandom when I was growing up - so mid/late '90s - and noticing a ton of older fans around then too. It's just because, you know, the movie came out a while ago, and it has fans who even earlier than that had been Bowie fans.

I think it's cool as hell when older people are into what I'm into.

Some of the best fannish talks I've had are with older people. I had a friend in her 40's and she was in all the stuff, which was awesome.

I just imagined someone doing a polished, shiny and new, 2013 remake of Labyrinth. It kind of hurt my heart.

I grew up with this movie. I saw it when it originally came out on VHS. Fandom may not have existed in the way you younguns understand it, as we didn't have the magical internet to connect with other fans far and wide, so yeah. We're gonna come back out of the woodwork to enjoy what we've always loved.

Jareth was ours first, kids. Get in line.

Usually it's the other way around. For every person like me, there's a dozen people who could be my kids.

Roll with it anon. You'll find that age isn't as important as you might think. 16 or 61, there's good conversation and works to be had. You may even discover you enjoy the fannish company of older women once you get used to the idea.

Don't worry, Op, you'll reach the age to be someone's mom soon enough.

I blame that movie for my sexuality, lol.

I've never done much internet fanning about it, but I'm always up to squee over it.

Not that I haven't met cool people who are younger than me and I think also smarter than me in fandom, but I would always prefer being surrounded by older fans. And not just for the maturity; sometimes they have the best stories!

Just of think of it in the sense that there's an archive of fic and fanart stretching back over decades. And that it's not about to die out any time soon.

I think a lot of fans on deviantart tend to run a bit younger with artists like Pika and what not over there.

And to that secret, I say thank fuck, because it makes for better writing overall. I think there is something deliciously meta and appropriate in the original material having such a very teenage heroine, with all her awkward drama and self-centeredness and cliché princess fantasies, and the Adult!Sarah fanfiction being written by frikkin' adults. With all the additional insights and maturity and sexual experience.

Not saying there aren't a few disturbing dirty ol'ladies out there mind you.

Also: Bowie fandom transcends space-time; and I am ever so delighted this made secret #13. :D

This movie came out two months AFTER I was born yet is my #1 favourite movie of all time (in fact I regularly have a sing-along of Magic Dance with a friend online).

Not that I really need an excuse but I'll have to watch this now.

And if 26 is old enough to be your mother then *wibble*
