[Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword]

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I liked skyward sword as a game, but I kept wishing I could have Midna back as my sidekick, or at least sheik. Fi is mostly just boring and it felt like she was wasted as a potentially interesting character.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the opposite, I found Midna very annoying. Tatl was a bit annoying as well.

My personal headcanon is that Fi somehow became Navi, and that's why she left at the end of OoT. Fi's blue, Navi is blue, it works!

Agreed 100% on all counts.

I feel like they were trying to make her ~different like Midna and failed miserably. Midna was fantastic - an example of a sidekick done right. They shouldn't have tried to measure up to her so soon. It just kind of crashed and burned. I wanted to punch Fi in the face every time she piped up UGH

(also, Zelda secret! yay!)

I liked Fi a lot. I think they were going for something completely different this time around. And I get that she was meant to be void of emotion, but I wish she could have had more interaction with Link more, like help him out with attacks. (being part of the sword could have opened up so many more options, besides dowsing for shit!)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I just miss Navi

Go play Ocarina of Time then.

I wish they had her shut up in hero's mode. I know all this stuff already, STOP TELLING ME!

...they didn't? SERIOUSLY!?

They should at least have an option to turn her off. I hope this is something Nintendo thinks about for the future because I mean my word

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I agree. I hated the way she talked, and she was overly-helpful.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-01-16 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Overly-helpful is so right. There were a few things that I really wanted to figure out for myself and she just...told me. That really takes an important aspect away from those games =(

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care for Fi either, but her sense of humor has nothing to do with it. Why should every sidekick be snarky? That'd get boring as hell.

She just reminded you too much about obvious shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
God, if we got another snarky sidekick, I'd kick puppies. There has been little variety. King of Red Lions is it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I love each and every sidekick Link has had so far. They all have their flaws but that just makes them better, I think. It's a shame really people are suddenly demanding all sidekicks be like Midna, snarky but nice, while a Midna-like sidekick in SS could have ruined the game. Compared to TP, SS was a very light game and such a dark character would have been very out of place. Even Ghirahim, though violent he was, came across as rather light hearted and somewhat joking.
I think a lot of people are forgetting the sidekicks are only really there to help new players and in very few cases they're actually an important part of the story line (TP, WW, SS for example).

Midna is far and away my favorite, but I DON'T want all other sidekicks to be like her. She's unique; she doesn't need to be done again.

I agree that SS needed a lighter sidekick, but Fi was just SO BLOODY ANNOYING. A character like hers could have been done so much better than it was =(

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked Fi actually. Because she was so genuine in wanting to help but so very old and young at the same time. She was created ages ago and though she knew basically everything about the world, she hadn't ever seen it before. I do think Link was the first human she ever communicated with so it would make sense for her not to know how that worked.
I'm having some trouble putting into words why I liked her but... I kinda liked her because she was such a robotic sidekick. Like there would be impending doom and certain death and she'd be all like "probability to die 85%"

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-01-16 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I saw the probability thing different? Like, the player was supposed to use that information to do the thing that was most likely helpful. It would have been better if once - just once - thing hadn't turned out like she predicted.

But what bothered me most about her wasn't so much the way she spoke, as the fact that she did it SO OFTEN. She popped up and interrupted what otherwise would have been really intense scenes; she gave me hints when I wanted to figure things out on my own; she broke the rhythm of gameplay. It's not just that I found her boring; she actively detracted from the challenge and overall gameplay for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-17 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
DA here, and I agree so much. I found her a bit boring, and it was a shame since, as the secret points out, her design was SO PRETTY and those scenes where she did her dance/ice skating thing were so beautiful, but I was willing to let it go since writing a character can be pure hit and miss. But did they have to make her pipe up EVERY. FIVE. SECONDS. to tell me stuff I already knew? By the end of the game I would be constantly be like "I KNOW, FI. GO AWAY, FI." and it really killed the mood for me :/

SPOILERS:

As a side note, remember that part in the game where you lose your equipment in the volcano area and have to sneakily go around and collect it all? I have the clearest memory of thinking "This is actually fun and challenging!" and I was having a blast and then, as soon as I found the sword again, realized that it was because that was the first time in the whole game in which I hadn't had Fi holding my hand through the whole section. It actually made me regret having to grab the Master Sword again since it meant Fi-less adventure time was over.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-01-17 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
She really took away from the Trials for me because after I failed once, and started to devise a strategy for how I was going to do it better, Fi just piped up and started telling me how I should do it. I'm like "...can't I figure this out for myself??" Made it way less challenging, like, "here I'll force you to read a guidebook on how to do this" when I wanted to strategize and be clever about it if that makes any sense

She annoyed me throughout the game, but when I had to say goodbye, ... I think that was the first time I teared up over a video game. She won't ever have an adventure again, not as herself anyway, and Link taught her how to feel and... baww!
