First ever online fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
What's the first fandom(s) you were ever involved with online? Are you still involved in it? What was your experience in it?

7th Heaven. The Television Without Pity forum was excellent. We snarked on the episodes, got really meta over it and wrote awesome fanfic - sometimes "what if this show were actually good?" fic and sometimes the craziest of crazy crackfic.

Can't name it, since it consists of me only, but yes, I'm still there. In fact, I only got in it half a year ago (IRL I've been in love with this work for one year and a half).

Due South in 1999, so right after the show ended. I haven't been in it for years though. My experience pretty good but I probably would have had a better time of it if I hadn't so obsessed with ONLY reading gen (and by gen I mean ABSOLUTELY NO SEX WHAT SO EVER) ... I think I annoyed quite a few people.

BSSM (and more a more minor capacity, Warhammer 40K and WoT). I still remember reading a million fics about people's original senshi, downloading scads of Japanese art and saving it to floppy discs along with the transformation music (in .midi and .mp2).

And oh, my very first flame, for having a Dark Angel army, from a fan of the Space Wolves. I still have that saved to a disc somewhere for posterity, I think. He even ended it with a rhyming scheme: my old handle (as is the wont of 12-year-olds) was "Master J", and I remember he cleverly paired it with "you are so gay".

Ahhhhh, memories.

The first fandom I found and devoured all the fic I could find in it was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The first fandom I contributed to was Westlife (RPS) when I got a computer of my own a few months later.

Charmed. Nope, stopped way before the show even ended. Mostly I hung out in AOL message boards and sometimes TWoP. Wrote a ton of terrible fanfic (does it count as badfic if the canon is also crap though?), including an epic AU that I abandoned after over 100 (short) chapters.

ST:TNG. The Picard/Crusher fandom, to be exact.

When I got into it we were on Y!Clubs. There were a lot of webrings, and several sandboxes? But I never understood how to join the sandboxes, and also they were labelled over-18, and I was 13 and scared of breaking rules. So for a very long time I just lurked and read. The rather appalling shipname "BonC" predominated.

Then Y!Clubs became Y!Groups, and the mailing list was pretty active for a few years. And FFN happened (yes, I've been in online fandom longer than Fanfiction.net has existed. Yargh) and a new batch of P/C fans started posting there.

The mailing list dried up a few years back, and now it's pretty much dead. There was a BBS for awhile, but now it's overrun with virusy bugware.

I follow the odd old-hand on Tumblr, and there are sometimes threads on TrekBBS, but I think the fandom has finally died. RIP.

DBZ, not involved anymore but I'm still friends with a guy I met through the fandom (we've been friends since we were about 12 or 13, and I turn 30 this year, wow). I don't remember much about it actually. USENET LOL

Pokemon. Technically anyway, I did team rating stuff at a long-defunct forum and I was a mod on another one that was a spinoff of it for a while. That was wayyy back...oh, about when GSC was new, if not earlier, because I remember reading on Pojo as they played through the 'new' GS version.

Gundam Wing. I joined a mailing list back on... e-groups, I think? It was later bought out by yahoo groups and moved over. It was actually a really awesome experience, since I made friends that I'm still friends with over a decade later.

Lurking? Inuyasha.

Participating? Star Trek.

They were both okay, but I move fandoms once every couple years or so when everything starts getting on my nerves. It preserves the good memories better. :)

X-Files, on USENET (those were the days), from the very beginning. Then in later seasons, the fic archives like Gossamer, and then Spooky sprung up. Finally, ugh, FFN. How was it? It was not only my first taste of fandom beyond Star Trek conventions, it was my first taste of the Internet, and a social life at all. It had its moments, that's for sure!

Harry Potter. Not really. Great, as it introduced me first to fandom in general and then to slash.

Sailor Moon! A friend on the local BBSes got me hooked on Sailor Moon, and when I got internet access, I found out about the SOS page - Save Our Sailors - because the dub had been cancelled shortly after we'd gotten into it. I hung out on what passed as a forum there and followed the links to Sailor Moon sites where I learned about the later seasons and the manga, and wound up getting involved in an RP with some other members, where I wound up playing Rei and Haruka. My two faves. :D

I'm not really still involved with it. I watched the rest of the series that wound up getting dubbed and aired on Cartoon Network, but I've kind of fallen away from it, and although I don't feel shame over it or anything, I kind of wonder sometimes what I saw in that show other than the awesomeness of Rei and Haruka plus "OMG IT'S JAPANIMATION", because that was a novelty to me back in those days, and now I've seen enough anime that I am not impressed by most of it. Still, I want to see the reboot SM anime for nostalgia's sake if nothing else, and maybe it'll remind me why I got hooked on it to begin with.

The Vampire Chronicle book series by Anne Rice - left it after the author started suing fans and the books started sucking.

Dragonball Z, I read shit-tons of fic when I was a kid. Occasionally I go back to it but then I remember why I stopped reading the fic because it's all the same '3 years' or high school AU crap, ugh no come up with something new fandom. I don't know how wanky it was though 'cause I just stayed in my shipping corner and didn't really see much of the rest of the fanbase, though I have heard there was some Bulma hate which makes me sad since she's one half of my DBZ OTP.

Doraemon. I was completely NUTS over it, bringing the comics to my religious studies school and searching for hours at Doraemon sites during the early days of the Internet.

Maybe Yu Yu Hakusho? I'm not sure. Man that was a long time ago...

Nope, though I wouldn't mind going back to it. I doubt there's anyone still around though, or any good fic or art.

I was a lurker, but I had a lot of fun with it and it was one of my first experiences with shipping a slash pairing, so I have some fond memories of it. I drew Hiei A LOT back then.

Anime in general. I went to a proper forum for it and all. Oh, but the first time I ever went on the internet I went to a Sailor Moon fanfiction site, lmao. Didn't really stay around though.
