10 and 2!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)

During a long commute today, I started thinking about where my hands go on the steering wheel. I tend to favor 7 and 3 for city driving, and one hand at 12 for long stretches of highway. How about you?

I like 7 and 3 for city driving, too. I remember it used to make my mother very very nervous when I was a relatively new driver. I use 9 and 3 for highway driving and driving where I have to be careful, because that's how I was taught to drive in Canada (something about it being safer than 10 and 2 if the airbag deploys, idk).

When I drive with both hands, my hands usually wander to 10 and 3 (asymmetrical, I know, weird). One-handed, it's usually at either at 11 or 5.

Mine do 10 and 3 too! I thought I was alone :)

I'm a shameless one-hander, unless I need to make a sharp turn, or the driving conditions are particularly difficult. I rest my arm in my lap and hook my thumb through the wheel.

One handed because I'm reckless like that.

I do a lot of one-handed driving, sometimes I hold the steering wheel at the bottom and SOMETIMES (ok being honest here) I steer with my knee while I use my hands for something

I do keep it at 10 and 2 for long drives but just for everyday commuting I usually don't

10 and 2 when I have to be careful. One hand at 5 or 6 for long stretches (12 is just awkward to me.) Sometimes when I'm making a turn I keep my hands at 5 and 11, or 1 and 7.

the 2 mark.
Just the 2 mark.

I drive manual in a hilly area dominated by curves, my left hand is on the gears pretty much the entire way.

8 and 4.

10 and 2 is how it is taught in the public-run driving schools up here, but I have been told by a couple different people, and read several articles which state this, that 8 and 4 is preferable. It provides equal control (if you are used to it) and if you're driving a car with airbags (which are most cars these days), then the more you have your hands up the more you risk getting face/hand injuries in a collision due to airbag expansion.

I don't really know if the latter part is true, but the first part is, and 8/4 is also easier for me for long drives (which I do a fair number of) so I like it.

Was just coming here to say I was taught 8 and 4 is preferable, because you're less likely to clock (groan) yourself in the face or dislocate your shoulders when the airbag goes off. Most newer steering wheels kind of direct you towards 8 and 4, too.

...That said, I tend to gravitate towards 9 and 3.

10 and 2 usually, but sometimes when I'm going just around the corner I switch to 9 and 3.

I think the current wisdom is that you should use 9 and 3 so that your arms aren't between your face and the steering wheel.

I actually like to grip the cross-pieces on the steering wheel rather than the wheel itself, provided I'm in a car where the wheel is structured so I can do this comfortably in roughly the 9 and 3 location - it puts less strain on my wrists.

I usually drive 9 and 2. Asymmetrical because my steering wheel needs aligned horribly and I can't wrap my hand around the wheel at 3 because that's where the part that has the horn connects.

It's such a habit that I'll do it in almost every car I drive, though. It makes me feel like I have more control.

Another 8 & 4 person, or when I'm feeling lazy just 4. With the exception of the Mythbusters episode, I have never heard about the problems with 10 & 2.

Also, I'm tiny and keeping my hands in the higher positions is just exhausting.

Fun fact: I thought from the header this would be a Doctor Who thread and then I was a little sad because my immediate response was "I would totally ship that"

Anyway, I'm usually at 9 and 3 myself, but I sort of wander a bit when I've driven for more than an hour.

10 & 4:30

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
If one handed, 2, 4:30, or 10 depending on the hand/how lazy I'm feeling. (2 is effort, 10 is lazy)

Two-handed, probably right hand at 2 and left hand at 9, occasionally right hand at 4 and left hand at 8.

While switching gears, left hand at 10.
