10 and 2!
(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 12:38 am (UTC)(link)During a long commute today, I started thinking about where my hands go on the steering wheel. I tend to favor 7 and 3 for city driving, and one hand at 12 for long stretches of highway. How about you?

I do keep it at 10 and 2 for long drives but just for everyday commuting I usually don't

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:17 am (UTC)(link)Just the 2 mark.
I drive manual in a hilly area dominated by curves, my left hand is on the gears pretty much the entire way.
Re: 10 and 2!
(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)10 and 2 is how it is taught in the public-run driving schools up here, but I have been told by a couple different people, and read several articles which state this, that 8 and 4 is preferable. It provides equal control (if you are used to it) and if you're driving a car with airbags (which are most cars these days), then the more you have your hands up the more you risk getting face/hand injuries in a collision due to airbag expansion.
I don't really know if the latter part is true, but the first part is, and 8/4 is also easier for me for long drives (which I do a fair number of) so I like it.
Re: 10 and 2!
(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:50 am (UTC)(link)...That said, I tend to gravitate towards 9 and 3.

Re: 10 and 2!
(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 03:08 am (UTC)(link)I actually like to grip the cross-pieces on the steering wheel rather than the wheel itself, provided I'm in a car where the wheel is structured so I can do this comfortably in roughly the 9 and 3 location - it puts less strain on my wrists.
Re: 10 and 2!
It's such a habit that I'll do it in almost every car I drive, though. It makes me feel like I have more control.
Re: 10 and 2!
Also, I'm tiny and keeping my hands in the higher positions is just exhausting.
Re: 10 and 2!
Anyway, I'm usually at 9 and 3 myself, but I sort of wander a bit when I've driven for more than an hour.
10 & 4:30

While switching gears, left hand at 10.
