I work 13 hours every day, sometimes longer, so I can't help sleeping late so what's something I can take in the morning to wake me up other than coffee? I can't stand the taste of coffee

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Me neither, and I always use black tea.

Accept my sympathies, though :( It really sucks

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Can you describe what that tastes like? I'm curious but "black tea" sounds like it would taste horrible.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
DA

It's... tea? I mean, it is tea that's not white, green, or oolong, that's been oxidized for longer than those varieties. It has a stronger taste and more caffeine, but it's tea. If you've ever had tea that wasn't explicitly white, green, oolong, or chai (which is made with black tea but is heavily flavored), it was probably black tea.

So yeah, it basically tastes like tea. In comparison to green tea, stronger and less floral, with somewhat of a deeper taste, less sweet. It's hard to describe, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's a bit of an anticlimax, then. Thanks :)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
If you've ever had iced tea, it's usually black tea.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard eating an apple will work, but I've never tried it myself.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's tea for me - a cup of black tea with milk and sugar wakes me up nicely. Black tea (rather than green or white, for instance) will give you the caffeine hit to wake you up, and you can always flavour as you like. Sometimes I like adding lemon/mint/honey/etc. =D

Yeah that was my first thought too but there's no such thing as hot chocolate where I am.

Th... no.... there's no hot chocolate? Where are you?

[personal profile] badass_tiger 2013-01-16 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Malaysia. All the hot chocolate I get is from when my dad goes overseas and buys me some. We have Milo, but it's different and you have to put condensed milk for it to taste like anything and that's way unhealthy.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Is North American Milo different from Malaysian Milo? I make mine with liquid milk and a quick zap of the microwave. Condensed milk makes it way too sweet.

Half a Nodoz is about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, and you don't have to taste it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
There are caffeine pills you can take - generally about 100mg. An 8oz cup of generic brewed coffee contains anywhere from 95 to 200 mg. From the Mayo Clinic: For most healthy adults, moderate doses of caffeine — 200 to 300 milligrams (mg) — aren't harmful. There is also a variety of caffinated sodas - how much caffeine they contain varies, although generally about 30 to 55 mg in 12oz. And there are energy drinks, but I wouldn't necessarily recomend those.

I sometimes will take an energy shot. It depends on the brand, I think, but it works as good as coffee.

Mints keep you awake. Altoids if you are a masochist.

I second the black tea. Or you might see it referred to as orange pekoe (that's what most of the major iced tea brands like Tetley and Luzianne consist of).

I generally drink one of those tiny cokes every morning and that helps me.

Tea.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Tea. S'brilliant. It comes in many different flavors, too. Black tea has the most caffeine, usually, but the others can have quite a bit of kick as well; I started with green tea, then switched to black tea (which is more bitter, so I don't recommend starting with it), then back to green tea occasionally, but did not start drinking a lot of tea until I discovered the wonder that was CHOCOLATE-MINT OOLONG TEA. SO GOOD. And it smells like HEAVEN. Mmmmmmm.

But, yeah, I recommend you start out with a green or an oolong tea blend; they are not as bitter as the black blends (white tea is the absolute 'easiest' type, but also tends to have little or no caffeine; there are probably other tea blends out there I'm missing but I don't drink 'em, so). I am not much of a tea snob (although I guess I'm beginning to become a bit of one) and really not a tea expert so I just buy it at the grocery store. You can often get cheap variety packs of different flavors of tea (I like blueberry and raspberry flavors of green tea around, and have buy them decaf for before bed when the mint chocolate awesome tea is not advisable since it does have caffeine) to see what you like.

it's not as effective as coffee, but scrambled eggs and ham definitely give me energy and wake me up somewhat if I have them for breakfast

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
When I was a kid I drank earl grey every morning to wake up. I had to catch a bus to school at 6:15 in the morning so I would drink my earl grey and watch Sailor Moon. I think I drank it because Captain Picard did, but I'm not sure

Sympathies about the bus at 6.15. But that pretty much describes my working hours too. I do like tea although I don't usually make it in the morning since other people will be using the kitchen at the time, but thanks to everyone's comments, I'll probably start bringing a cup in to work every morning now.

having a hot shower first thing/ doing exercise for 5 minutes in the morning might help if you can't find anything to imbibe to keep you awake

A fast shower. One that's not too hot. I find that those things make me want to go back to sleep, haha. Substitute with washing your face in cool-to-lukewarm water.

I do a combination of what people have said above and a little bit more. I usually have black tea with scrambled eggs and one toast for breakfast, then I eat/drink something cold and tart like juice or a piece of fruit. After taking vitamins and brushing my teeth I'm usually awake enough to start the day. (The caffeine's from the tea has kicked in by then, methinks!)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
No-Doz? One tablet has the caffeine of two cups of coffee, and being in pill form, it's tasteless.
