Loved it! But I also love fanfic where Simon bangs Mal and Kaylee screws Inara and just about any combo of pairings for the show. I was never very interested in reading fics where River is one half of the romantic pairing (Rayne kinda gives me hives, but each to his or her own), but I have read some CSI that was good storytelling (musesfool's Tending to Grace comes to mind) and at least one River/Kaylee that I liked.

Agreed on that. And yeah, I too avoid any kind of River pairing.

I'm sure there's a ton of variety within Rayne fic, but every single one I ever clicked on featured underaged River and made absolutely no attempt to deal with Jayne's betrayal, the age disparity, River's mental illness. Just not for me at all.

+1000. I'm perfectly willing to ship River with just about anybody else, actually, but Rayne? Hell no.

I can't do Mal either with River. Or with Kaylee. I get such a father-figure vibe, particularly on his relationship with Kaylee, that I just can't ship it.

Yeah, with Mal/Kaylee I feel like it would always be like...playing house or something, I don't know. I get more of a sibling vibe than a paternal one from them, but I totally see where you're coming from.

I ship raynw, and my reasoning is: River's a weapon. Jayne loves weapons. He's older than her, but thsn she's smarter than him...I just felt like Jayne is someone who could think 'awesome!' When she goes assassiny rather than just hating it.
