But Mal doesn't use it because that's the word he associates with Inara's profession, he uses it to hurt Inara because he knows she hates it. If you notice the way Inara responds when Jayne refers to her profession as 'whorin', you can see the difference. She doesn't get upset with Jayne because she knows that's just Jayne's way of speaking and he isn't using it to disrespect her the way Mal does.
