I'm not a hockey fan and I read RPF sometimes, but ultimately I think it's understandable because the dudes are so incredible bland in real life that there's no characterization to mess up. And there are plenty of slash fandoms with masculine guys, so I suspect by "masculine" you mean "lacking any personality whatsoever, like muscular ken dolls".

However, I live in a hockey obsessed city and I know EXACTLY what you mean about real-world benefits. It's not about faking anything, it just makes life easier. People take that shit really seriously.
