Shindig, argh. Mal defending Inara was really irritating considering the way he acts towards her himself (she even calls him on it, and he waves her off with some weak sounding defense like "I may call you a whore, but I see the real you" or something like that).

It also didn't help that I don't think they could've worked as an actual couple without making some serious changes to their beliefs and attitudes.

I would love to read a fanfic where Mal undergoes character development, realizes how disrespctfully he treats Inara and that he needs to stop. I still do like the idea of Mal/Inara (because their actors do have great chemistry) but it would take effort for it to believably work.

(Also, off topic, but I love your icon.)

If you ever find a fic that actually develops Mal's character like that, you must share it with the world because that's a Mal/Inara fic I could get behind. Alas, the few M/I ones I've read basically kept their canon dynamic but added in sex or completely re-wrote Inara's character to fit their relationship. Which...no, thank you.
