I read the first case as indentured servitude/debt-bondage rather than the sort of chattel slavery that played a central role in the American Civil War.

Yes, she explicitly refers to Mal as her 'indentured man' in that scene, and also states that he still has a certain number of years left to serve before he is allowed to leave. I don't think there's any evidence to suggest that chattel slavery exists in an institutional capacity in the Firefly universe, though some of the places the crew visits have oppressed people that are in such a crapsack situation that it does resemble slavery (like Jaynetown, for example)
