(I was just reading the "Concerning Hobbits" prologue of LotR last night. The hair on their feet was cited as one of the reasons why they don't wear shoes so I presume it helps keep their feet warm. Also, shaving a dwarf's beard is an insult worthy of gutting your mother. Dwarves value their beards second only to their gold.)
