I love well-done kidfic, personally, but I think it's one of those all or nothing things. People either seem to love it or to hate it, and I can understand people just not being interested in it. The fact that a lot of it is badly written probably doesn't help some people's opinions, either. I totally agree that it can be just as interesting as other types of fic and that it really can be a good way to explore character and family dynamics, but a lot of it really is just an excuse for fluff. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Fluff can be good, too. ;)

Babies are just smaller slime monsters.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
So your reasoning is that you can't creatively think of anything else so you plop in some babies? That's sucky reasoning. Just admit you flat out enjoy writing kid-fic and stop trying to argue it. You can enjoy something just because you enjoy it.

I knew there was something about this secret that bothered me. This was it. Babies aren't a cure for creative bankruptcy (but they can be a symptom of it!).

I admit I stopped reading the secret as soon as that clicked.

Kill or reproduce? Those are all your options?

WTF, OP, where is your creativity?

I have other ideas too, but sometimes I'm just like "Goddammit I'm sick of writing this hugely complicated plotfic, I'm hiatusing it for a while and writing a simple baby-oneshot."

I'm just sick of people ragging on me for it.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
For me, whether I think kidfic is annoying or not is entirely dependent on the characters involved.

When I was heavy into The X-Files, I would be all over any story where Mulder and Scully had a kid, or adopted a kid, or had to take care of a kid, etc. Bring on the babies! In contrast, it's a rare thing that I come across a John/Sherlock kidfic that I can stand because 1) I think Sherlock would be an awful parent, 2) the idea of him wanting kids at all feels ridiculously OOC to me, and 3) as much as fandom paints John as wanting (or thinking he wants) the traditional settled-down-family-man life, we've seen no indication that he really wants the offspring part of the deal and his original literary counterpart is never said to have had children. With those characters, usually the whole exercise winds up just being silly and full of people behaving bizarrely.

That said, I might like to read some fic with fucking and babies and slime monsters and locusts. None of these are mutually exclusive!

I like the babies + zombie apocalypse combo, myself. Running from flesh eating hordes and having to worry about dirty diapers? Classic!

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
So you're really gonna like this next half of The Walking Dead?

Personally, I'm a fan of SGA kid fic, because I like the idea of kids growing up in Atlantis, particularly in the 'left to fend for themselves' society building type verses.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
So wait.

You complain that it's all been done, and so KIDFIC is your answer?

...But that's the most cliche thing of all.

I don't mind kid!fic, but only if it is written well. As a teacher, I cringe at the children in at least 90% of the kid!fic I read. And most of the time I end up backbuttoning.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I was reading a kidfic the other day and I thought the kid was supposed to be maybe 5-ish, then later in the fic found out they were just turning 10. People really need to do a little more research when writing kids. Or a lot more.

I totally and completely agree.

Very true, and not just fanficcers either. I remember reading children's/YA fiction as a tween and go o.0 over how authors more or less consistently wrote kids as way too immature or (rarely) too mature.

Yeah... I could probably get into kid!fic a little more often if the kids were, y'know... kids. Apparently that's a challenge most people don't care to rise to.

[personal profile] meredith44 2013-01-18 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
It is difficult, I guess. Especially if you are trying to write a child that is old enough to talk and interact (versus a baby), and you have not been around children much. But still, I would like at least a modicum of accuracy.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I love kid fic, but a lot of it does have really, really badly written kids. They either read as way too young or way too old for the age they're supposed to be.

(Then again, I have the same problem with a lot of TV shows and movies doing a shitty job writing kids. A lot of people just can't write kids well or believably.)

That may be why I have less tolerance for kidfic now than I used to. I knew fuck all about young kids and parenting when I was younger and while my experience is still relatively limited (I don't have kids) I have a much better sense of how kids behave and particularly how they relate to adults.

I like kidfic and there's plenty of good, well-written kidfic out there. I know people tend to imply that somehow kidfic is a genre that is mostly poor written and there's only like two good kidfics out there or something LOL but that's not true. There's horrible kidfic and goodfic in roughly the same proportions as other genres of fic.

Write and read whatever makes ya happy, OP. :)

So I got the sense that this had something to do with liking kidfic, though I couldn't read a lot of it. I agree family dynamics are fun! I can like kid fic, so long as the kids aren't too much like precious little blobs of nothing that can be laid in a crib and ignored. Or creepy old-souls in doll-like bodies. Yeccch!

red text is baaaaad

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
also, the yellow text worked in the borders of the picture, where the background was darker, but near the center, where it got lighter, it got painful to read

I couldn't read the second half of your secret without giving myself a headache, op

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love Kid!fic more if most of the ones I came across didn't use it as an excuse to write themselves in and have the original characters only appear for 5 seconds or so.

I don't mind kids being in fic, it's fics that focus on kids that I'm not fond of. But then I'm not too fond of kids IRL so I could be biased :p.

That being said, I agree, bad kidfic is the worst. I'll read almost anything if it's written well, but writing kids well seems to be a talent that precious few writers have indeed. Myself included. Which is why any time I do put a kid in a story, I either barely mention them, or I age them up to young adulthood so I can write them with some semblance of reality. Go me, completely missing the point of kidfic :p.
